Applications for commissary scholarships due Feb. 24

Eligible students who want to apply for the 2012 Scholarships for Military Children program still have time, but the clock is ticking. Applications must be completed and delivered, not postmarked, to a commissary by close of business Feb. 24.

9th ESB removes seawall

TORII STATION — Marines with 9th Engineer Support Battalion and soldiers from U.S. Army Garrison Torii Station recently removed a 120-meter-long seawall near the Torii Beach shoreline.

Kadena recognizes outstanding airmen

KADENA AIR BASE – Base officials held an annual awards banquet Feb. 3 to honor the most outstanding airmen and civilians of 2011. The following individuals were recognized:

18th Wing

• Company Grade Officer of the Year: Capt. Joseph Andresky, 33rd Rescue Squadron.

• Senior NCO of the Year: Senior Master Sgt. Kimberly Turner, 18th Force Support Squadron.

• NCO of the Year: Tech. Sgt. Benjamin Puryear, 18th Communications Squadron.

DOD opens more jobs to military women

WASHINGTON - Military women, particularly soldiers, will see more than 14,000 new job or assignment opportunities because of policy changes the Defense Department announced Feb. 9.

The changes are included in a report the department submitted to Congress, based in part on findings the Military Leadership Diversity Commission reported in March 2011.
