Mae Brinck Checks Ballots In Cromwell
"We have freedom to vote in the United States of America," says Mae Brinck about her experience as a Cromwell ballot clerk for the past 25 years. On Thursday, Brinck carefully checks each ballot and makes sure that it can be recounted correctly at town hall. After the votes were counted on Election Day, Republican Allan D. Spotts had nine more votes than Democrat Frank C. Emanuele Jr. in the board of selectmen race. Friday's recount upheld Spotts' victory, but by only six votes. A recount is required by law when the difference is 20 votes or less or when the difference is less than one-half percent the total vote. After more than six hours of counting, Brinck said, "We're still struggling with numbers."
