ANR Camp at Tarcoonyinna Creek (1 August 1977)

I got a job with the Australian National Railways in 1977 at the Tarcoonyinna Creek camp. This was a section of the Tarcoola to Alice Springs new Ghan Railway line. Some 50 men stayed at the camp that consisted of portable huts called ''Dongers''. A kitchen mess , a Wet Mess ,ablutions ,offices ,worksheds were part of the buildings there.

The camp was about 3 kms back from the Sturt Hwy. The area was quite flat with a profile of open land with mulga trees scattered through the landscape. There was no water in the creek which was non visible.

The camp did get flooded in August up to around 300mm deep. Very cold at night but sunny days. Plenty of flies to hassle you. Didn't see any wildlife other than a few parrots here and there. Nothing much at all. The river beds we crossed were all stone dry.

Life in the camp was always interesting with Wet Mess brawls , drunkardness , movies twice a week , consisting of a white sheet hanging down from a container. Food was pretty good. Being in semi-desert camp the general cleaniness was exception . We had bashing occasionally done by the the few no- hopers in the camp but on the whole the camp ran quite happily.
