Sustainability Report 2024

Released as of

Report Info

As greenwashing penalties become more prevalent, the industry is forced to hold itself to higher standards when it comes to transparency and sustainability claims. Certain brands are doubling down on their efforts, from Everlane shrinking its per-product carbon impact in 2023 to Dedicated evolving from a Swedish T-shirt shop to a global ethical streetwear brand.

However, while some brands are making strides toward achieving their sustainable goals, the entire fashion industry must act to effect meaningful change. One driving force behind the transformation is the onslaught of regulation coming in the months ahead. From the Fashion Act and the Fashioning Accountability and Building Real Institutional Change (FABRIC) Act in the United States and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and forced labor provisions in Europe, legislators are clamping down on the supply chain—from traceability of manufacturing and inputs to labeling for the end consumer.

Regulation has also had plenty of impact elsewhere in the supply chain. With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) setting an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, top brass at major ocean carriers are now feeling the heat to achieve that same goal. Non-fashion companies are also stepping up to the plate, like Salesforce, which called for government action on multiple initiatives at the intersection of sustainability and the development of artificial intelligence.

Sourcing Journal’s 2024 Sustainability Report aims to educate readers on the increasing importance of sustainability and the imminent legislative changes poised to redefine the fashion industry.
