Vitamin B9 (folate) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that occurs in fruits, leafy green vegetables, liver, and other foods. Folic acid, the synthesized form of folate, is present in fortified foods (eg, breads, pasta) and supplements; however, the terms folate and folic acid are often used interchangeably. Folic acid supplementation continues to be actively debated in the medical literature, with conflicting findings regarding its significance.
Although folate deficiency clearly predisposes to several health consequences, more recent studies raise concerns about toxicities and health consequences related to oversupplementation. Do you know key clinical information about folate, including risk factors and symptoms associated with deficiency and issues related to excessive intake? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
