RIESS--Michael. The 92nd Street Y Board and Staff mourns the passing of Michael Riess, beloved father of Board member, Dr. Gail Saltz. RIESS--Michael, Naval Analyst, Entrepreneur, 76, of Wilmington, NC, died Monday October 8, 2007. There will be a private service for the immediate family. Michael was born on March 13, 1931 in Berlin, Germany, son of Ilse and Curt Riess. He emigrated on the Europa to the United States in 1936. He attended PS6 in Manhattan followed by Peter Stuyvesant High School before serving as a paratrooper and instructor stationed at Fort Bragg, NC during the Korean War. After the war, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at New York University and a Master's in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Maryland. Michael worked for the Navy in Washington, D.C. where he assisted the Secretary of the Navy, Paul Nitze before becoming Chief Scientist for anti-submarine warfare under Admiral Charles Martell. He left the Navy in 1970 for the private sector and became an independent business man in New Jersey, establishing several companies before retiring from Warren, New Jersey to North Carolina. He enjoyed traveling in their single engine Grumman Tiger with his wife, both of whom were instrument qualified pilots. They flew to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and across the United States. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dr. Doris Riess of Wilmington, his daughters Dr. Gail Saltz and her husband Dr. Leonard Saltz of New York, NY and Holly Hagerman of Newark, DE, and his son Dr. Adam Riess and Adam's wife, Nancy, of Baltimore, MD as well as seven grandchildren.
