Abstract
In the 17th century intense interest to Georgia became evident in Europe, which is proved by the works of European diplomats, missioners and travelers, as well as by literary works. Intrusion of Georgian theme to European literary works first of all is associated with the prominent person such as Queen Ketevan.
Historic fact of martyrdom of Georgian queen in 1624 at the court of Shah Abbas I was widely reflected in historic character works and in literary works of west European countries. Image of Ketevan was reflected in the tragedy of German dramatist Andreas Gryphius “Ketevan (Catherine) of Georgia, that is Unbroken Strength” (1657) and in 1701, a school play was staged about the Queen Ketevan in Slovakia, in Jesuits gymnasium of a town Skalica. The play had a title: “Catherine (Ketevani), Queen of Georgians, Decorated with her Blood, Presented on the Stage” /” Caterina, královna gurzianská, vlastní krve ozdobená, na divadlo predstavená”. Theater was a significant supporting element for Jesuits in a matter of education, this is why the thematic of the so-called “school plays” was defined and it served moral education and the great attention was paid to selection of themes.
Author of Slovakian play about Ketevan is unknown. He is referred to as Jesuit from Skalica. Complete text of the play didn’t reach us but its synopsis was preserved in Slovak language (Slovakized Czech language). Georgian queen presented in the play should have been a symbol of faith and devotion to her country and should have been an example for spectators and for youth – a model for imitation of high moral.
It should be stated that the synopsis contains “brief historic preface” which describes the events on the background of which the action developed and provides spectators with information about far countries (Georgia, Iran) where the play heroes were from. Besides, the author refers to the historical sources used by him.
