The essential oil from the gum of Pistachio (Pistacia vera L. (Anacardiaceae)) grown in Turkey was obtained by the hydro-distillation method, and its chemical composition was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Moreover, the antimicrobial activities of the oil against the growth of 13 bacteria and 3 pathogenic yeasts were evaluated using the agar-disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) methods. The results showed that the essential oil contained about 89.67% monoterpenes, 8.1% oxygenated monoterpenes and 1.2% diterpenes. alpha-Pinene (75.6%), beta-pinene (9.5%), trans-verbenol (3.0%), camphene (1.4%), trans-pinocarveol (about 1.20%), and limonene (1.0%) were the major components. The antimicrobial results showed that the oil inhibited nine bacteria and all the yeasts studied, and the activities were considerably dependent upon concentration and its bioactive compounds such as carvacrol, camphene, and limonene. Moreover, the essential oil of the gum was found to be more effective yeastcide than Nystatin, synthetic yeastcide. Furthermore, the antibacterial activities of the oil were lower than those of standard antibiotics, ampicillin sodium, and streptomycine sulfate under the conditions studied.

In this study, the antimicrobial activities of several parts of various trees grown in the Kahramanmaraş region of Turkey were investigated by the disc diffusion method. Chloroform, acetone and methanol extracts of leaves, resins, barks, cones and fruits of Pinus brutia Ten., Juniperus oxycedrus L., Abies cilicia Ant. & Kotschy Carr., Cedrus libani A. Rich. and Pinus nigra Arn. were prepared and tested against Bacillus megaterium DSM 32, Bacillus subtilis IMG 22, Bacillus cereus FMC 19, Escherichia coli DM, Klebsiella pneumoniae FMC 3, Enterobacter aerogenes CCM 2531, Staphylococcus aureus Cowan 1, Mycobacterium smegmatis RUT, Proteus vulgaris FMC 1, Listeria monocytogenes Scoot A, Pseudomonas aeruginosa DSM 5007, Candida albicans CCM 314, Candida tropicalis MDC 86 and Penicillium italicum K. The results showed that antifungal effects were not observed for the whole extracts, E. coli was not inhibited by any of the plant extracts except by the chloroform and acetone extracts of the leaves of A. cilicia, which showed inhibition zones of 16-18 mm, respectively. All the plant extracts used in this study inhibited the development of the other bacteria studied. When the results of this study were compared with an ampicillin standard, it was found that the microorganisms studied were generally susceptible, intermediate or resistant to the extracts of species when compared with the ampicillin standard. On the other hand, the acetone and methanol extracts of Juniperus fruits were found to be quite resistant.

In this study, it has been investigated that the sinergytic effect of some kind of juices with antibiotics. As a result of this study; juices’ and the antibiotics’ sinergytic effects ultimately has been given as positive results. Interaction of the juices with five antibiotics, ampisilin (AMP), nitrofurantoin (F), azteonam (ATM), gentamycin (GM), amikacin (AK)- especially Gentamycin (GM) and Amikacin (AK) have been found as more effective on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter amnigenus, Enterecoccus faecium, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Son yillarda insanlarda gorulen Listeria salginlarinda basta sut ve sut urunleri olmak uzere et ve et urunleri, balik ve kanatli etleri gibi hayvansal kokenli gidalar uzerinde patojenik olarak onemli bir rol oynadigi ortaya konmustur. Bu calismada, Kahramanmaras ilinde cesitli satis yerlerinden temin edilen 30 tavuk eti ornegininde Listeria turleri arastirilmistir. Butun orneklere 30 °C’de zenginlestirme yontemi uygulanmis ve Listeria Selektif Agar besiyerine yapilan ekimlerin sonucu degerlendirilmistir. Đnceleme sonucunda orneklerin 20’sinde Listeria izole edilmistir. Yapilan biyokimyasal testler sonucunda bu izolatlarin tumunun Listeria grayi oldugu belirlenmistir.

Karpuz suyuna aktive edilmis maya hurceleri (Candida utilis ve Saccharomyces cerevisiae) asilanarak Tek Hucre Proteini (THP) uretilmistir. Karpuz suyu ilave edilen besin ortaminda farkli konsantrasyon, sicaklik, glukoz, fruktoz, sakkaroz ve pH’in etkisi arastirilarak en uygun THP uretim sartlari belirlenmistir. Arastirma sonucuna gore; S. cerevisiae % 30 karpuz suyu iceren ortamda, C. utilis ise %20 oraninda karpuz suyu iceren ortamda en iyi gelismeyi gostermistir. En uygun sicakligin C. utilis icin 30 oC oldugu belirlenirken, S. cerevisiae icin ise 25, 30 ve 35 oC’lerde benzer sonuclar alinmistir. Humans find several uses for plants. Not only is it good for you from a nutritional standpoint, but it has also been used to cure a wide range of illnesses. In this research, we analysed Campanula strigosa Banks & Sol. for its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations were also calculated. For this purpose, a soxhlet apparatus was used to extract ethanol and methanol from the plant's above-ground portions. The effectiveness of antioxidants was measured using Rel Assay kits. The agar dilution technique was used to test for antimicrobial activity against various bacterial and fungus species. Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was used to quantify total phenolic content. An aluminium chloride assay determined the total flavonoid concentration. Studies found that the plant extract had a TAS value of 4.974±0.259 mmol/L, a TOS value of 12.437±0.150 µmol/L, and an OSI value of 0.251±0.014. Propolis, ari kovanlarinin dis ortamdan izole edilmesi, kuvvetlendirilmesi ve dezenfeksiyonu icin kullanilan dogal bir ari urunudur. Propolisin etanolik ekstraktinin insandaki tuberkuloza neden olan basiller dahil, Gram-Gram+basil ve koklara karsi genel bir antimikrobiyal etkisinin oldugu bulunmustur. Propolis etanolik ekstraktinin farkli konsantrasyonlardaki cozeltileri, Escherichia coli ATTC 25922 disinda calismada kullandigimiz bakteri ve maya suslarinin gelismelerini engelledigi tespit edildi. Ekstrakte edilen yag asitlerinden nervonik asit (24:1) 15.8 mg/g, palmitik asit (16:0) 9.6 mg/g ve stearik asit (18:0) 2.72 mg/g propolis olarak belirlendi.

The aim of our studies was to test the effect and role of vitamin E and selenium supplements on yeast cell. In this study, the effects of selenium (Se), vitamin E (Vit. E), and their combination (Se plus Vit. E) on the composition of fatty acids and proteins were examined in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains WET136 and 522. S. cerevisiae cells were grown up in YEPD medium supplemented with Se, Vit. E or their combination. It was found that the level of stearic acid was increased in all supplemented groups (p < 0.05; p < 0.001). The content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids was decreased (p < 0.05; p < 0.01; p < 0.001) in Vit. E and Vit. E plus Se supplemented S. cerevisiae. On the other hand, Se alone caused an increase (p < 0.001) in the saturated fatty acids but a decrease (p < 0.05; p < 0.001) in the unsaturated fatty acids. Total proteins in S. cerevisiae were significantly increased (p < 0.001) by Vit. E supplement. There was no significant change observed in S. cerevisiae supplemented with Se. These findings indicate that membrane composition of S. cerevisiae is affected by both Vit. E and Se supplements.
