ABSTRACT In this paper, we present a new FDMA-PON (Frequency Division Multiple Access – Passive Optical Network) architecture proposed by the FP7 EU STREP project titled “FABULOUS”. The paper is focused on the upstream transmission, based on an innovative reflective optical network unit (R-ONU). A detailed theoretical analysis is first presented and used to optimize the system parameters, then we show the experimental results, demonstrating a 16 Gbps upstream bit rate per wavelength.

ABSTRACT In the framework of the EU-funded research project “FABULOUS,” we experimentally demonstrate an innovative FDMA-PON architecture whose upstream transmission is based on a reflective Mach-Zehnder modulator. By a careful optimization of electrical spectrum allocation, semiconductor optical amplifier biasing point, and modulation index, we upgrade previous results over similar architectures, significantly increasing the achievable optical distribution network loss. We demonstrate an overall upstream capacity of 32 Gb/s per wavelength over 37 km of installed fiber and 31 dB loss.
ABSTRACT We experimentally demonstrate a FDMA-PON system targeting 20 Gbps per wavelength in the upstream, using a real-time FPGA-based transmitter and low-speed baseband DSP, in the framework of the EU research project FABULOUS.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we demonstrate 1Gb/s bidirectional transmission over a single 1mm step-index Plastic Optical Fiber, over the record distance of 75m. A single fiber has an overall diameter significantly smaller than a UTP Cat.5 cable; this can be a significant advantage in brown-field home networking installations. We successfully tested our system running real time Gigabit Ethernet traffic generated by a router tester.

ABSTRACT We compared the performances of different modulation formats for the transmission of the Gigabit Ethernet signal over 50m of SI-POF. We demonstrated that duobinary provides the best performances, without any significant increase in implementation complexity. We investigated also the implementation of the duobinary coder, decoder and its proper equalizer over a FPGA, in order to have an experimental confirm of the results achieved by off-line processing.

POF-PLUS is a EU project pertaining to the 7th framework program with the aim of developing high-speed communication systems based of PMMA optical fibers for home networking and data centers. In this paper we report the results of the tasks focused on 1 Gbit/s communications for home environment after two years of the project.

ABSTRACT We present the final results from the POF-PLUS EU Project, demonstrating the transmission of a Gigabit Ethernet compliant stream over 50m of 1mm PMMA SI-POF with consistent system margin, using commercial RC-LED. The results were made possible by a careful optimization of the physical layer architecture. We completed our system with a clock-recovery mechanism, which enables our prototype to become as stand-alone.
