Objective: We performed quality control testing of the disks used to assess the susceptibility of pathogenic microor- ganisms to antibiotics. Materials and Methods: The quality of 36 lots of antibiotic sensitivity disks of five different brands traded in the Peruvian market was assessed using NCCLSs (Kirby-Bauer technique) M2-A5, supplement M100-S7 standard. Lots of disks of Amicacine, Amoxiciline/Clavulanic Acid, Ampiciline, Ceftazidime, Cefuroxime, Cloranphenicol, Erithromicyn, Estreptomicyn, Gentamicyn and Penicillin were assessed. The findings were compared to the values stated in the standards, using the Confidence Limits Test (t0.05). Findings: 41,7% of the lots of disks assessed met the requirements stated by the standards; 48.3% of the disks manufactured abroad met the aforementioned requirements. The effect of irradiation of the aqueous solution of L. m. muta venom was evaluated with thermic neutrons from Uranium-235 employing doses of 1.61 to 5.19 Gray. The venom was examined for protein content by the Folin Lowry Method modified by Stauffer; for acute toxicity by intraperitoneal route estimation in mice and for immunochemical tests by the antigen-antibody reactions evaluation. Neutronic radiation affects all evaluated parameters in venom (decrease in protein content levels, increase of LD50 values and decrease in the number of precipitating antigen-antibody) as shown by immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis.

Se investigó la prevalencia de infección con el virus de la hepatitis B en personas sanas de 4 localidades de la Selva Central del Perú. Mediante la prueba de ELISA, se determinó la presencia en suero de Antígeno de superficie de hepatitis B (HBsAg), de Anticuerpos contra HBsAg (anti-HBs), y de anticuerpos contra el antígeno de Hepatitis Delta (anti-HD). Se encontró prevalencias de 6,8% a 53% para el caso de anti-HBs y de 1,2% a 4,4% en el caso de HBsAg. Se identificó factores de riesgo probables en cada población, pero no hubo uno que fuera común a las cuatro. El contacto cercano con personas infectadas pareció tener un rol importante, mientras no se encontró evidencia de que la transmisi6n parenteral fuera importante.

We report a structural and functional proteomics characterization of the venoms of the two subspecies (bilineatus and smaragdinus) of the South American palm pitviper B. bilineatus from the Brazilian state of Rondônia and B. b. smaragdinus from Perú. These poorly known arboreal and mostly nocturnal generalist predators are widely distributed in lowland rain forest throughout the entire Amazon region, where they represent an important cause of snakebites. The three B. bilineatus spp venom sampled exhibit overall conserved proteomic profiles comprising components belonging to 11 venom protein classes, with PIII (34-40% of the total venom proteins) and PI (8-18%) SVMPs and their endogenous tripeptide inhibitors (SVMPi, 8-10%); bradykinin-potentiating-like peptides (BBPs, 10.7-15%); snake venom serine proteinases (SVSP, 5.5-14%); C-type lectin-like proteins (CTL, 3-10%); phospholipases A2 (PLA2, 2.8-7.6%); cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRISP, 0.9-2.8%); L-amino acid oxidases (LAO, 0.9-5%) representing the major components of their common venom proteomes. Comparative analysis of the venom proteomes of the two geographic variants of B. b. smaragdinus with that of B. b. bilineatus revealed that the two Brazilian taxa share identical molecules between themselves but not with Peruvian B. b. smaragdinus, suggesting hybridization between the geographically close, possibly sympatric, Porto Velho (RO, BR) B. b. smaragdinus and B. b. bilineatus parental populations. The toxin arsenal of the South American palm pitvipers may account for the in vitro recorded collagenolytic, caseinolytic, PLA2, L-amino acid oxidase, thrombin-like and factor X-activating activities, and the clinical features of South American palm pitviper envenomings, i.e. local and progressively ascending pain, shock and loss of consciousness, spontaneous bleeding and profound coagulopathy. The remarkable crossreactivity of the Brazilian pentabothropic SAB antivenom toward the heterologous B. b. bilineatus venom suggests that the paraspecific antigenic determinants should had been already present in the venom of the last common ancestor of the Bothrops "jararaca" and "taeniatus" clades, an event that has been dated about 8.5 Mya in the mid-late Miocene epoch of the Cenozoic era.

Objetivo.- El carcinoma de celulas en anillo de sello primario del colon y recto, es una neoplasia poco frecuente, variedad del adenocarcinoma del intestino grueso. El proposito de este estudio fue establecer su incidencia, historia natural y relacion con el cancer de colon no polipoide hereditario (HNPCC). Metodos.- Se revisaron las historias clinicas e histologia de 28 pacientes con diagnostico de carcinoma de celulas en anillo de sello primario del colon y recto, en el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN), entre los anos 1991 al 2002. Resultados.- La incidencia del carcinoma de celulas en anillo de sello fue del 5.09% en relacion con los casos de adenocarcinoma primario del colon y recto. Los pacientes fueron diagnosticados en estadios avanzados de enfermedad (C y D de Dukes). En la mayoria de casos la neoplasia comprometio todo el espesor de la pared intestinal (Tipo Borrmann IV). Objetivos: identificar practicas de consumo de tabaco y otras drogas en estudiantes de pregrado de ciencias de la salud. Metodologia: estudio descriptivo transversal mediante encuesta autoaplicada en 2.074 estudiantes de 9 carreras de salud de una universidad privada de Lima - Peru. Resultados: la prevalencia de vida (PV) y el uso actual de tabaco fueron: 81.9% y 38.7%. El 15.6% de los estudiantes fumadores actuales, fuma o sintio ganas de fumar al despertar en la manana. El 45.3% consume tabaco desde los 16 anos, 25% fumo por primera vez en una fiesta y 45.8% sigue fumando en eventos sociales. En la ultima semana, 68.5% se expuso al humo ambiental de tabaco fuera del hogar. Existe una significativa asociacion entre el habito de fumar de padres, hermanos y amigos y el hecho de ser fumador o no fumador. Hemolytic activity of eight Peruvian snake venoms from the families Viperidae and Elapidae (Bothrops atrox, B. pictus, B. hyoprorus, B. bilineatus, B. neuwedii, Lachesis m. muta, Crotalus d. terrificus, Micrurus tschudi), and three Brazilian viperids (B. jararacussu, B. alternatus and C. d. collilineatus) is described. None of the venoms caused direct lysis on washed human erythrocytes. However, all of them caused indirect hemolysis provided that the incubation medium contains an exogenous source of lecithin. Venom of Micrurus tschudi was the most hemolytic (HD50 2.8 ug/ml) while that of B. bilineatus was the least (HD50 681.3 ug/ml). Only six of eleven venoms showed parallel curves of hemolytic activity, and the HD50 varied from 198 to 681 ug/ml and the following decreasing order of hemolytic activity was obtained: L. muta, C. d. terrificus, C. d. collilineatus, B. hyoprorus, B. bilineatus, B. alternatus.

De acuerdo a la Organización Mundial de la Salud más de 1 billón de personas distribuidas en 149 países son afectadas por enfermedades tropicales desatendidas, ocasionando cuantiosos daños económicos, sociales y psicológicos a las personas afectadas, así como un elevado gasto estatal. El envenenamiento por mordedura de serpiente es una de las más desatendidas: se estima que anualmente de los casi 5 millones de mordeduras de serpiente que ocurren a nivel mundial, la mitad genera envenenamientos que ocasionarían entre 94-125 mil muertes, 400 mil amputaciones y otras secuelas severas. Por ello se realizó una búsqueda en Pubmed para identificar publicaciones en los que se hayan usado terapias complementarias o tradicionales o alguno de sus componentes. The wound healing effects of Jathopha curcas latex upon surgical wound produced in Balb/c mice skin, were studied with a modification of the Hoowes-Sooy-Harvey method. The effects of topical treatment using single 50 ul doses of latex at different dilutions (10% to 100%) was compared with a multiple dose treatment (four 25 ul/dose q12h, latex 5% to 100%). The single dose treatment with 10%, 50% or 100% latex and the multiple dose treatment with dilutions between 5% and 10%, have a healing effect but only on males. The multiple dose treatment with 50% or pure undiluted latex produced caustic lesions to treated skin.

The protein composition of the soluble venom from the South American fish-eating coral snake Micrurus surinamensis surinamensis, here abbreviated M. surinamensis, was separated by RP-HPLC and 2-DE, and their components were analyzed by automatic Edman degradation, MALDI-TOF and ESI-MS/MS. Approximately 100 different molecules were identified. Sixty-two components possess molecular masses between 6 and 8 kDa, are basically charged molecules, among which are cytotoxins and neurotoxins lethal to fish (Brachidanios rerio). Six new toxins (abbreviated Ms1-Ms5 and Ms11) were fully sequenced. Amino acid sequences similar to the enzymes phospholipase A2 and amino acid oxidase were identified. Over 20 additional peptides were identified by sequencing minor components of the HPLC separation and from 2-DE gels. A functional assessment of the physiological activity of the six toxins was also performed by patch clamp using muscular nicotinic acetylcholine receptor assays. Variable degrees of blockade were observed, most of them reversible. The structural and functional data obtained were used for phylogenetic analysis, providing information on some evolutionary aspects of the venom components of this snake. This contribution increases by a factor of two the total number of alpha-neurotoxins sequenced from the Micrurus genus in currently available literature.

The venom proteome of the poorly studied desert coral snake Micrurus tschudii tschudii was unveiled using a venomic approach, which identified ≥38 proteins belonging to only four snake venom protein families. The three-finger toxins (3FTxs) constitute, both in number of isoforms (~30) and total abundance (93.6% of the venom proteome), the major protein family of the desert coral snake venom. Phospholipases A₂ (PLA₂s; seven isoforms, 4.1% of the venom proteome), 1-3 Kunitz-type proteins (1.6%), and 1-2 l-amino acid oxidases (LAO, 0.7%) complete the toxin arsenal of M. t. tschudii. Our results add to the growing evidence that the occurrence of two divergent venom phenotypes, i.e., 3FTx- and PLA₂-predominant venom proteomes, may constitute a general trend across the cladogenesis of Micrurus. The occurrence of a similar pattern of venom phenotypic variability among true sea snake (Hydrophiinae) venoms suggests that the 3FTx/PLA₂ dichotomy may be widely distributed among Elapidae venoms.

Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the colon and rectum is a rare form of adenocarcinoma of the large intestine. The purpose of this study was define the incidence, natural history and relation with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). We reviewed the medical records and pathology of 28 patients with primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the colon and rectum seen at the Instituto de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN), between 1991 and 2002. In the present study the incidence was 5.09% of large bowel adenocarcinoma. Most patients present with late stage disease (Dukes stage C and D). In most cases the signet ring cells diffusely infiltrated through all layers of the intestinal wall (Borrmann IV). Male to female ratio was of 1 : 1.5, mean age was 55.5 and median age was 57 years (range 11 - 83 years). Comparison of our data with the literature showed some differences that could be related with biological characteristics of our people and different applied inclusion criteria. We couldn't define the relation between HNPCC and primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the colon and rectum.
