    The life-saving appliances carried on modern ships, including diving support vessels, are the result of many years of development. This has been stimulated by legislation, the needs of the marine industry, and public opinion, and further development will undoubtedly follow on from the latest international legislation,1 which came into force in 1983 and will begin to take real effect in the summer of 1986.
