The fast expansion of this sphere of research requires the development of reliable and reproductive models applicable to the increasing number of knock-in or knock-out mice that are now available. Here, we discuss several commonly used ex vivo and in vivo models by illustrating how they pointed out the functions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) during the complex angiogenic process associated with cancer progression and dissemination.
