PDHitCounter Template

[edit source]

Hi Sidelight12. I note that you made a helpful change to the PDHitCounter template that I created for the ParkinsonsScience learning project. It took me a while to work out that it was a useful change so thanks for that. But it would have been good to have had an explanation from you on the discussion page because I must admit my first reaction to someone changing it was negative! I created the template because I could not find a suitable ready-made hit counter elsewhere in WV. As you are an experienced template maker, do you think it is is worth creating a generic Hit Counter template on these lines for general use by others? Cheers. Droflet (talk) 11:52, 3 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

To address the reply you have just put on my Talk page, I hadn't noticed that the hit counter had stopped working so thanks for spotting that. I created it because we needed one for the Parkinson's Science learning project and that is why it is prefixed with 'PD', like other pages in this project. If it were to be used more widely without modification then it should lose the 'PD' prefix. But I thought others, such as yourself, might have ideas on how it might be improved for general use. So if you think it is worth putting out there for others to use without modification, then let's rename it! (Note that my convention is to put it on the Talk page so as not to clutter the resource page with something that only those with an interest in monitoring a page would want.) Droflet (talk) 10:37, 4 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Note that there was a bug in HitCounter which I have fixed. It needed to use SUBJECTNAMESPACE so that it worked with pages in namespaces other than Main (but counted the hits for the Resource page when implemented on the Talk page). Droflet (talk) 13:48, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Re your latest comment on my talk page, until I discover a need that is incompatible with our now 'public' HitCounter, there should be no need for a separate, bespoke PDHitCounter. Droflet (talk) 09:49, 6 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Probationary custodianship

[edit source]

Are you still interested in probationary custodianship? If so, I think you just need to find/accept a mentor and mention here - Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship/Sidelight12 Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 03:27, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I still accept. I can provide help towards Wikiversity. Thanks. Sidelight12 Talk 05:11, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Apologies for the long delay. You are now a probationary custodian (min. 4 week probabation period, then all going well nomination for full custodianship). I suggest you try out the extra rights e.g., delete, block, protect and let me know if I do anything to help. Also check out How to be a Wikimedia sysop and maybe see what could be improved there. Looking forward to having you on board. Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 22:57, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. - Sidelight12 Talk 17:15, 5 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
It is great to see you trying out the tools, reading and thinking about policies etc. and being bold with Wikiversity maintenance. Thank-you! Remember to undo or unprotect this practice: [1]. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 11:32, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Custodianship

You need to calm down, and show prudence. Show that you are able do it on your own. I don't know if it is for you, until you can show that. Sidelight12 Talk 15:57, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Solar system resources under one resource

[edit source]

Hi Sidelight12!

Doing a quick concept search using ""solar system" a", without the outer quotes, I find 171 resources with content about the solar system. There is also "[a]n interactive (audio-picture) study module for young students" titled Solar System.

For the course "Introduction to the Planets", there are Mercury (Planet), Venus, Earth, Moon, The Moon, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, Io, Comets, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and 148780 Altjira.

There some solar system related resources such as Solar System and Stellar Astronomy, Organization of the Solar System ( esp. Mars and history of Mars myths, The Terra Papers Hidden History of Planet Earth, Planetary science, Sun (star), Classical planets, Solar binary, Meteor astronomy, Crater astronomy, Sun as an X-ray source, Earth-impact events/Discussion, Nonstandard physics/Solar planets as gravitational resonators, Pioneer anomaly, Lunar Boom Town, Meteorites, Age of the Earth, CisLunarFreighter, Astroglaciology, Urantia United, Earth-impact events, and Glaciers.

It's okay with me to try to place some or all under one resource. Currently, in the Category:Solar System there are 20 resources. All but a couple are subpages for Solar System.

What did you have in mind? Perhaps I can help. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 16:33, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Thanks for responding with interest. I definitely plan to group the course Introduction to the Planets in a tree under it, as you listed. Then add Titan, Sun (star), and Classical planets (as an overview) to it.
The next part can vary. I could merge the two title pages, of Introduction to the Planets with Solar System. The pages under it perhaps shouldn't be merged, and have an advanced and basic study for each celestial body. It could be listed under the main page under a table. The other option would be to merge the interactive page on a planet with the advanced page, but that would be too messy. Another option is to merge all of the interactive pages on planets (Solar System/Earth/Solar System overview/Mercury) into one page. - - Sidelight12 Talk 06:47, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like putting Introduction to the Planets under Solar System, whether under Solar System, the secondary education course, or under some umbrella like Solar system or Solar system resources. Some of the others I listed above may be better under an umbrella term like Solar system or Solar system resources: Solar System and Stellar Astronomy, Solar binary, Meteor astronomy, Crater astronomy, Sun as an X-ray source, Meteorites, and Astroglaciology. If you like I could prepare a template of Solar system resources which could be linked to from the Main page. A portal may also be a good option. Feel free to try some experiments with this. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 23:25, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Definitely keep the Introduction to the Planets separate from other resources. Here's what I had in mind, User:Sidelight12/sandbox. - Sidelight12 Talk 03:00, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like it! --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 20:52, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It seemed like a good idea, now I have doubts if it would work. One resource is underdeveloped and the other is technical. Combining the two resources without merging the pages could work. Do you have any ideas? - Sidelight12 Talk 13:07, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like what you've put together in User:Sidelight12/sandbox. Scanning through Introduction to the Planets, I've found a number of resources needing more info, and I intend on creating a few, short, hopefully appropriate quizzes, and a few more resources as listed and some not. Whenever I come across more info on a solar system object I either create the resource or add to the existing. The interactive resource Solar System is mostly visual with some text. But, I could probably bring it closer to completion along the lines intended by the original creator. Suggestions welcome! Keeping the resources separate is probably the better choice in view of the intended audience for the latter. If what you've created in your sandbox is directly linked to from the Main page as a resource, e.g., The Solar System, it makes a great structural link to begin learners' journey. Some additional links and some tweaking is all that may be needed. May I ask what your doubts are? Perhaps I'm overlooking something. Otherwise, may I suggest creating the resource from your sandbox and let's run some tests to see what else it needs. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 22:45, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
My doubts were that one project is incomplete and elementary level, and the other is technical. That leaves a gap in the level of the resources. The other doubt was if another resource was developed it would immediately have to be integrated into this one. The whole project would have to be looked over, and that may be unfamiliar to everyone.

I could keep them completely separate, then have a page Topic:Solar System to link to both separate projects, and any related topic. The topic page could look like the sandbox page, but not have the items under its tree. - Sidelight12 Talk 05:18, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I moved the course to Solar System, technical, and pages are in a tree under it. I added it for consideration to Wikiversity:Featured, which is currently inactive, but attention can be brought to it by mention from the colloquium. - Sidelight12 Talk 06:28, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would like to create another resource for comets. The current resource Comets is primarily aimed at amateur astronomy which kind of fills the gap between Solar System and Solar System, technical. Several of the technical resources have sections devoted to types of comets and a number of lecture/articles in Principles of radiation astronomy have subsections concerning comets. What do you think? From this resource another could be generated for Solar System --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 22:39, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

As long as the structure is organized. Are all comets we know of a part of the Solar System? If so, Solar System, technical is a good home for it. Or a category under Comets/Advanced. Another option is to also just add to the comets resource. Or if you want you can have it as a single resource, with just a different name. Naming it Comets, descriptor can't go wrong, it can be organized later.
The Solar System resource looks like an elementary level book, and the Comets resource is too advanced for it. It would only work if you wanted to overhaul the project to a more advanced course, which changes the objective of the resource.

Radiation astronomy resources under one resource

[edit source]
I think the astronomy spectrums (Red Astronomy, Orange Astronomy, Infrared Astronomy) should be under one resource. - Sidelight12 Talk 03:31, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Radiation astronomy can be a superstructure for all, but I created each, including the various color astronomies, to emphasize energy from meteor astronomy, which at an extreme would include hypervelocity galaxy clusters, supernovae, hypervelocity stars, down to leptons, gamma-rays to radio astronomy in the subluminal and luminal portions then onto superluminals. Giving the luminals a separate breakout may sidetrack that idea. So for now I like it the way it is. Any particular reason you want to separate them (visual astronomy and optical astronomy already put them together). --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 13:30, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
It looked like the same subject type and style of astronomy split into spectrums. The works show planets under different bands of colors of astronomy. I noticed celestial bodies such as Saturn and Jupiter under different bands of light, and what it meant for chemical composition. It looked like an extension into finding the composition of distant stars and galaxies through different spectrums of astronomy. The research looks like it covers more than meteors. - Sidelight12 Talk 13:51, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I didn't mean as a page merge, but instead under one folder. Well, that's fine. - - Sidelight12 Talk 14:03, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Study Guides

[edit source]

Great idea on the Category: Study guide category! However, I noticed that other categories like this (Category: Courses, Category: Lessons, Category: Articles, etc.) are plural. In fact, the category Category: Course even has a 'do not use' notice and redirects users to the plural category instead. I'm renaming the category to Category: Study guides. I hope you don't mind. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:34, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Singular form seemed better, but if the other ones are in plural, I don't mind having the category adjusted. - Sidelight12 Talk 13:57, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Importing

[edit source]

Yes, you should now have import rights (as a custodian) which will allow a page's editing history and not just content to come across. So this is preferable to copying content. See Special:Import and Wikiversity:Import. Have a go and let me know if I can do anything else. Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 23:08, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I figured some of it out. How can I import the edit history alone, and history up to a certain date? Thanks. - Sidelight12 Talk 00:11, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm guessing you have some copied content and you want to try to integrate the editing history up to the original copy date? I'm not sure what is possible here. Perhaps create another copy of the page and then try importing to that page and see what happens? If it is good, then this can be renamed/moved and the previous copy can be deleted. If not, then we will probably need to live with the new page without the editing history. In that case, perhaps leave a note about this on the resources talk page. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 01:08, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
There are a few pages that have been copied over by any user, but some effort was made to attribute, and make it suitable for Wikiversity's goals. I've seen it done from Wikipedia to Wikibooks. The custodian moved the page to transwiki, the selected history was moved over cleanly. I'm not sure if this is available here. Maybe I'll figure something out, but it may not be possible yet. About the other comment, I don't want to be too bold. I don't want to upset anyone in a way that I wouldn't want to be upset. I value other people's contributions. Just want to delete pages with no content, or were copied from Wikipedia with no effort to say it was copied from there. - - Sidelight12 Talk 18:19, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. Let me know if you work it out. Consider pinging Darklama - usually very helpful re the technical side of MediaWiki and the Wikimedia world. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 10:55, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia allows for others to copy its information as long as you declare that it is from Wikipedia; other publications don't let you do that. A tag or a mention on the talk page is all that is necessary. This page looks different than the Wikipedia page, and there is effort to develop the page. Thanks for the unprotection of Talk:Wikipedia

[edit source]

Looking that the history of that page, it seems to have been revision-deleted, but not in a way that would leave a clear trail. It was done in the old way, already obsolete by then, of deleting the whole page, then restoring selected revisions, but there is no way for an ordinary user to tell how many revisions were deleted. Sysops can read deleted revisions. [[User:Markoni] was blocked without waring, who made a single edit to Wikiversity that was not improper, in itself, for that Talk page. I looked at cross-wiki contributions, and I see that the user was charged with sock puppetry, but there was no clear trail on Wikipedia. The sysop was desysopped for actions like this. The user should be unblocked.

As a note on revision deletion, we don't have an established policy, but our policy should be no less restricted than Wikipedia's. There, revisions are only deleted where leaving a revision visible in history would cause serious harm. It's a tool to be used sparingly, because it hides history and can then foster suspicion of administrative misbehavior.

(Revision "deletion," if you don't know, doesn't actually delete the revision, it merely hides it, or details of it, such as user name, revision comment, etc, such that only sysops can read it. There is another tool which actually makes revisions not visible even to sysops. Rarely used.)

FYI, the default for pages is unprotected; if I'm correct, an expiring protection level leaves the default. I..e, unprotection does not expire, only protection. However, there was clearly no extended vandalism or other seriously problematic editing of the page, at most there might have been edits, that the sysop wanted to hide, once. --Abd (discusscontribs) 16:17, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

The editor that got blocked on Wikiversity, Markoril, was blocked from Wikipedia by an admin who claimed that person was a sockpuppet. I have no reason to argue with the other editors. The only way I could unblock them is to ask the two custodians what happened, since I believe the ip records delete after a few months. It was long ago when that happened.
I think that the edit protection expires, I wanted to give it time, in case it was the wrong move, someone could undo it before it expires.
(from the colloquium) For the protected template, I think it gives the same partial protection warning for both fully protected and partially protected pages, which can be misleading. - Sidelight12 Talk 14:17, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Ah, you semi-protected, which will allow then, after expiration, full unprotected access, the norm. I misunderstood.
  • I also misread and thus misstated the name of the blocked user, just a reading error on my part.
  • As a general rule, we do not block users for behavior elsewhere, so the opinion or action of the Wikipedia sysop is irrelevant. With few exceptions, we avoid judging what is done on Wikipedia, it is a huge can of worms. However, the custodian here, who blocked Markoril, often did that kind of thing, it was a major reason that he was desysopped.
  • The basic point: there was no reason for the block, following WV:Blocking policy. Probably the damage is done. Possibly the user would have become disruptive, but simply criticizing Wikipedia (mildly, compared to what we have seen) on Talk:Wikipedia would not lead to a block, unless continued more intensely and disruptively, and the user would be warned before being blocked.
  • Again, as a general rule, we will give a block reason on the user talk page. What we have there is only a welcome template from the custodian who blocked the user. This is far outside of what this community has wanted Wikiversity to be. Many users have been welcome here who were blocked or banned on Wikipedia. The custodian who blocked was banned on Wikipedia, as am I. One of our most productive users is indef blocked on Wikipedia. Etc. Here, he allegedly repeated the same "copyvio" behavior that led to his block on Wikipedia, and we simply warned him, and he stopped and cleaned up what he'd done. This is a very different place.
  • Further, we would normally leave Talk page access in place, so that a user may appeal the block, with an unblock template. Ideally, we use a block message that reveals how to appeal. That's normal on Wikipedia, but sometimes neglected here. There are aspects of our blocking policy that remain controversial, but what I'm saying here has not been controversial whenever considered by the community.
  • The edit to Talk:Wikipedia was reverted by the same custodian. If this was a blocked user on Wikiversity, that would have been proper, but no evidence was provided of that in the revert. I am accordingly undoing the revert, and will sign the contribution on the Talk page for the user. This is not a conclusion that the edit was useful, but users are allowed to discuss pages or the topic of the page, on attached talk pages. Contributions may also be archived, collapsed, etc., but we avoid censoring Talk. We have far worse discussion standing on Wikiversity, in archives or pages.
  • I'm bringing this up here, instead of WV:RCA, for your benefit as a probationary custodian, because of the policy issues it reveals. You are not obligated to do anything, but it could be simple if you did, since you have already looked. --Abd (discusscontribs) 15:15, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know the statistics from the checkuser they used. You were a custodian around that time, and could have discussed an unblock. It was years ago, before I started editing, I don't see how it is still relevant if the user is probably not coming back. If I do anything, I'd have to ask the custodians who know about this. I just know that I wouldn't do an improper block to the best of my knowledge. This looks like it has to do with animosity between a custodian. - Sidelight12 Talk 15:48, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I looked. I found no sign of checkuser having been used. Perhaps I missed it, but it's not relevant. There was no socking here, as far as we know. You are correct that the user is probably not coming back. However, we are ensuring that this user not come back, at least not with that name. The user may register a new account, losing nothing. However, I'm raising this to expose policy issues: do custodians here block for reasons like that? What do you say? Was the block proper? By the way, I have no idea of "personal animosity." I rather doubt there had been any interaction between the custodian and the user, other than the welcome template and the reverted edit and block.
I'm asking you to look and judge, and I am doing that because you are a probationary custodian. --Abd (discusscontribs) 16:01, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
[2] is likely the suspected puppetmaster. However, Markoril is not noted on the SPI page and the blocking admin did not refer to the SPI case, nor was the user page edited to reflect a suspected sock. There was no pattern of disruptive editing from Markoril, there was really only the same thing as here. The user had one possibly positive contribution. However, Markoril was possibly the IP who placed the last comment on Talk:Markoril. We would normally encourage an editor like this to make positive contributions to Wikiversity. That they are angry with Wikipedia -- which is what commonly causes long-term behavior like that seen from ViperNerd -- isn't relevant here, in itself. That immediate block here would solidify the animosity and extend it to Wikiversity. We do not know if other disruptive editing here can be traced to that, but it is possible. --Abd (discusscontribs) 16:23, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • "Using other usernames" is not grounds for blocking on Wikiversity, the legitimate block rationale is "Use of multiple accounts to affect community consensus." If one did this elsewhere, it would not be grounds for blocking here. Quite simply, we do not need to judge the behavior of editors elsewhere, and it's generally a bad idea to attempt it, except maybe to be helpful. I have more than one account here. So?
  • There could be another reason for blocking, which would be block evasion. If the intention of a block was to block an editor, the person, then a sock might be blocked for editing, and that's a judgment call. On the other hand, sometimes a sock is blocked without blocking the main account. Indeed, that happened to me, once, here. It was undone at my request. --Abd (discusscontribs) 19:02, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

This has to do with animosity between you and Ottava Rima. You had custodian privileges then, and you didn't look into this or bring it up. This is irrelevant. Don't ask me about blocking, when I already answered the question. I'm done with this. - Sidelight12 Talk 09:30, 6 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

You can still ask a custodian who has been around then, and is still around now, possibly through WV:RCA. I have trouble understanding the purpose of this being brought up two years later. - Sidelight12 Talk 20:56, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's because it is not about what happened two years ago. It's about present Wikiversity policy (which hasn't changed). --Abd (discusscontribs) 01:02, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Translation of your Swedish course into greek

[edit source]

Hello there! I am learning swedish and i thought i should help others in greece learn the language with the greek translation of your effort. But i am also new with wikiversity. So during translation, i made mistakes in editing. Now in your page Introduction to Swedish there is still a link to the greek translation (even though i have deleted the entry). The link is "Ελληνικά" but the context el: Εισαγωγή στα Σουηδικά has been deleted by me. Do you know what should i do (or probably you, in which case i apologize in advance for spending your time) to fix it? Ok. i got some help from a user in #wikipedia named Honem. He suggested removing the el:εισαγωγή στα σουηδικά from your template:Introduction to swedish and this worked. Kosnick 21:06, 4 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

You wanted the Greek page of introduction to Swedish deleted? Clear the page, then put delete template on the page in Greek Wikiversity. A while ago the Greek page looked like it had an English title, but now the title is in Greek. Did you get it figured out? I haven't tried putting language links in the templates, but if you were to try, put it after a "<noinclude>" tag. - Sidelight12 Talk 21:06, 4 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I found the English titled page on the Greek Wikiversity, el:Introduction to Swedish a delete template should go there: it was mentioned in the request pageColloquium. Most custodians on English Wikiversity don't have access to delete a Greek Wikiversity page. - Sidelight12 Talk 21:25, 4 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your whitelisting

[edit source]

[3]. First of all, standard procedure is to propose a whitelisting on the Talk page attached. Unilateral blacklisting or whitelisting is discouraged, because it's not transparent. Your action will specifically whitelist pages that have been globally blacklisted, because the whitelisting is totally generic. We have recent youtube video spam here that has been interrupted by global blacklisting.

Was there any request for this that couldn't have been handled by the user just using the original youtube link?

The URL is a youtube "shortener." It's not needed for any youtube video. However, any spammer will be able, now, with that whitelisting, to bypass the meta blacklist to place a *specifically blacklisted* youtube video on Wikiversity.

Spam is a difficult problem and there is a balance between preventing it and enabling users to use legitimate links. Did you see the open request on WV:RCA permanent link? There was essentially consensus to whitelist, but nobody knew how to do it. Adding the regex code given there to the spam-whitelist might be useful, though it all probably took too long. --Abd (discusscontribs) 18:40, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Nice to see you again, doing the admin stuff! Sidelight, do you have any advice for me about this? = Motivation and emotion/Book/2013/Shyness. Any tips? - Goldenburg111 Nov 11,2014

I thought that book was a class project for people that physically attend a university, and it'd be better to contribute to an article outside of that project. If you mean about contributing: find a source like the links I showed you and pick out the important information and write that in your own words.(again, it wouldn't be a good idea to edit that project) Be sure you leave a link to the article after each sentence. Is that what you meant?- Sidelight12 Talk 23:10, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have moved it to my collection of books about emotions and other resources, and yes, I have been using the links you recommended, they have been very useful! And yes, I will be sure to leave a link to the article after each sentence, thank you for the advice! --Goldenburg111 (talk) 23:14, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh, you moved this page to your userspace. It's a good page. The answers in the multiple choice could be changed up, and there are a few grammatical errors. What specifically did you want help on? - Sidelight12 Talk 23:19, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I just wanted advice like: This part of the article are tips, these need to have bullet points. --Goldenburg111 (talk) 23:29, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Bullet points are a style. If you want to list and organize certain parts, bullet points are a choice to use. It could have a section on saying people can cope while having their shyness. I noticed that some sentences, while grammatically correct for speaking, aren't complete for written form.(which is ok for this article and if you want that to be the style here) Good article, I'm impressed by it. If you want to add more, some research may help you. - Sidelight12 Talk 23:38, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am planning on running for adminship after I am done "Semi-Retiring" Wikiversity. Do you have any suggestions or comments? --goldenburg111 (talk) 23:16, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

You mean a break. You've come a long way, and have made better edits, in the past few months. You're a lot closer to becoming an admin, but are still not ready. Keep practicing using sources, to add material to your articles. The projects under your user-space were good. - Sidelight12 Talk 12:20, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, "retired" usually refers to someone who has really intended to leave. "Semi-retired" is just a reduction of activity, and "wikibreak" is used for this, whether the activity is reduced or eliminated for a time.
Goldenburg, please don't bring up becoming an administrator for quite a long time, I'd suggest one year minimum. It just invites people who don't understand what you were doing to comment negatively. What you were doing was behavior that would not be appropriate for an administrator, and not even for ordinary users, so this community will want to see that this is truly gone, not merely "stopped" for a little while. Do not be discouraged by this, it's just a matter of time, if you are patient and steady in your intention.
Before you apply for adminship again, I suggest, as well, that you have email enabled. You'll have to have an email account somewhere. That can provide a means of contacting you off-wiki. If you aren't ready for that -- you might not be! -- then you probably are not ready for adminship. But most of what needs to be done here can be done without administrative tools. A history of requesting proper administrative action is something else that can be useful if you later apply. (A history of improper requests can have the opposite effect!) In any case, I'm always glad to see that you are well and active. --Abd (discusscontribs) 15:07, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'd like to see Goldenburg become an admin on whichever wiki, one day. That time is so far off, its better for him not to worry about it, and just focus on improving as an editor. He can contribute a lot, and even do translations. - Sidelight12 Talk 15:35, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Abd for the warm welcome, the purpose of this section is so I can get an early "report". So if there is anything needed to be improved, I'll will work on it. And thanks Sidelight for the comment, I am happy you would like to see me become an admin somewhere else. Well, first, Wikiversity, it is a small wiki which if I am granted admin rights, I can help with vandalism and general work for the Community of Wikiversity. Thank you (User talk:Dave Braunschweig) <---- Discussion here :) --goldenburg111 (talk) 16:34, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I meant here too. Chill out about it. I read that you're a roll backer on the Simple English Wikipedia. Be happy with your privilege there; its a good step. Keep finding good sources so you can summarize the important points and use them. - Sidelight12 Talk 08:20, 7 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Sidelight and Abd, let's drop the discussion here, but I'll let the discussion at my talk page last until the end of the month. Sidelight, can I cut this discussion and insert it in User:Goldenburg111/Custodianship/Sidelight12's talk page discussion or should I just copy this discussion? Thanks! --goldenburg111 (talk) 17:24, 7 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Texas Project

[edit source]

Greetings Sidelight12! I was wondering if you and me would like to start a Texas project. I used to live in Texas, and you live in Texas. What do you think? --goldenburg111 (talk) 15:02, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I was actually thinking of that hours before I read your message. I was remembering a Texas history class from grade school. How could it be different than something written on Wikipedia? I'm thinking of a few ideas, or a larger project including economy, environment, history, sights (want to keep it different than wikivoyage), or something totally original (important historical markers, state/national parks, events, texas triangle plus neighboring metropolitan areas [in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Louisiana]). Also, could be included is the surrounding region of Texas. What did you have in mind? - Sidelight12 Talk 17:16, 15 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have started the project, you may edit it. Cheers! here. --~~Goldenburg111 22:21, 30 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Oh ok, cool. My motivation comes and goes. When I want to learn something new, I start contributing. I see the page. What I was asking earlier was what did you want to focus on, that would make this project different from a wikipedia project (aside from allowing original research)? Content preservation

[edit source]

Thanks for offering help

[edit source]

[4]. However, you may be giving this user incorrect information. I did not object to the user blanking his pages, precisely because, in his user space, he may do that. But you referred to deleting the pages. That is not an unconditional right. These pages were moved to his user space so that he could work on them undisturbed, not as a preliminary move toward deletion. If he requests deletion, anyone can remove the speedy deletion tags. He would then need to go to Wikiversity:RFD to obtain deletion, and it is by no means automatic. In some cases, the pages in his user space are linked from other pages, right now through redirects. He also blanked pages that were in mainspace, and in some cases, there is some substantial work on them, formatting, etc., by me.

I have been attempting to save this user's content from deletion. They were not facing deletion, but I've seen what happens to pages like his over time, including pages much closer to the mainstream. They get deleted, if they are not handled in some way, and a move to user space is one way. Now, if he really wants them deleted, I'd want to review them. I don't want this to happen instantly. However, this user blanks pages frequently, it is not a deletion request.

Thanks for understanding. The user may need some help understanding what is going on. −Abd (discusscontribs) 00:36, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

One more point. Glimmerguard is Shadowjack, and it can be very much our business to know that. On some wikis, this would practically be an automatic block. Not here, especially because the user has acknowledged the identity, but it does create problems for, say, an RC patroller like Goldenburg, who may think that a cross−user edit, such as one user blanking the page of another user, might be vandalism. I'd recommend that the user stick to one account, but this is not a requirement, at least not yet. Where he edits the same page with both accounts, as he sometimes does, it does create a potential problem. Maybe you can help him with that. —Abd (discusscontribs) 00:45, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

You deleted my fork of this, making nonsense of my Talk page comments. I did a fair amount of work on that version, it seems you manually did some of it (wikifying the section headers). Would you mind restoring my version in my user space so I can compare, or, better, merging the history so that all revisions are visible? Thanks. —Abd (discusscontribs) 14:22, 30 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

My mistake; apologies. My intent was to recover the edit history. I completely understand how people don't like their work removed, and this wasn't my intent. I'll try to fix this. - Sidelight12 Talk 08:51, 31 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I restored it to your edit. Is this right? - Sidelight12 Talk 09:15, 31 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
