Digital Media Concepts

[edit source]

Regarding Digital Media Concepts, I've renamed this resource. There's no advantage to having Intro in the name. People searching for digital media won't find it if it starts with Intro. Also, we typically don't sign content pages, only discussions. I cleaned up some of the links. If what I did isn't what you intended, feel free to change it back or otherwise make adjustments. This looks like the start of an excellent course. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 23:35, 14 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dave, Is there some formatting for an infobox? Thanks. Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 02:24, 15 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

What type of formatting are you looking for? -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 23:12, 15 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

See Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Tutorial/Wikipedia links for a tutorial on linking. On-wiki links should be created as internal links using [[title]] or [[title|display]] syntax rather than as https links. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 12:35, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much for all your help, Dave. --Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 00:08, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've moved the student assignment pages under the Digital Media Concepts learning project. As stand-alone pages, others are likely to edit or even delete them. By putting them under the main learning project, they should be left alone for the students to work on. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 21:12, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Do you want to collaborate with a physics prof in Ohio?

[edit source]
See this page for other 13hartc productions

This is one of many projects that my students have done that combines my interest in physics with your interests in multimedia. We could also make svg files to be posted on Wikipedia.

I believe in making physics phun (sic) and try to express that with images. You don't need to go too deep into physics because I currently teach it at only the first-year level. But if you want to delve into physics at a higher level, a colleague and I wrote this paper on a private wiki, and it might be good to have a video of students playing the card game. At a lower level, here are some images that I recently published in Sky&Telescope.--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 12:03, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Guy vandegrift: Thanks, Guy. It looks really interesting. Unfortunately, I am not really versed in physics. Not sure that I would be the best person to collaborate with. --Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 04:55, 18 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

New Pages

[edit source]

When students create new pages, have them do it without external links. They can add the links afterwards, but new users can't create pages with links in them already. Otherwise, if you give me a list of usernames, I can tag their accounts so they won't be considered new users for a week. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:30, 18 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Dave. I forwarded your message to the students. --Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 04:46, 18 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Note that Dwingdwang and Zblazin are still trying to create everything at once. It might be easier to have them edit the Digital Media Concepts page to indicate a title, and then you could create placeholder pages for them.

Also, I see some students uploading pictures to Wikiversity. While this is allowed with proper licensing, it is better to upload files to Commons:. The upload wizard there is much better at ensuring that proper licensing is included, and all wikis can then use the images.

Let me know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 03:12, 21 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Point well taken. Licensing and usage rights are important. I am not able to find Dwingdwang's or Zblazin's page. The only page I can find appears to be a subpage [1]
Thanks again so much for your time. --Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 03:48, 21 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Their attempts can be seen at Special:AbuseLog. They are trying to create pages with links embedded rather than just create pages. When they attempt too many times, they just get locked out. Please encourage students to first add their names and projects to Digital Media Concepts. It will be much easier to assist them if we can first identify them. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 12:15, 21 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Digital Media Concepts

[edit source]

Hi Ireicher2!

Your course Digital Media Concepts appears to be well-developed and ready for learners! Would you like to have it announced on our Main Page News? --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 15:58, 2 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Marshallsumter: That would be wonderful. Dave Braunschweig was essential in making sure that the articles were in accordance with wikiversity standards and guidelines. He definitely deserves credit. --Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 17:13, 2 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

[edit source]

Please remind your students to add appropriate license information for any files they uploaded. A number of images were identified yesterday as missing information and will be deleted after 7 days if not corrected. Let us know if you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 02:57, 19 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

FYI

[edit source]

I just wanted to make you aware of User talk:JayceeLorenzo. We do expect students to take their opportunity to contribute to Wikiversity seriously. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:20, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Dave Braunschweig: Sure. I do to. Is there a problem? Students are just starting their projects -- Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 00:48, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Just that the page title should be descriptive, and the content needs to be constructive rather than "lol". I'm assuming when the page is recreated that it will be better, but I wanted to let you know that I did feel it necessary to delete the initial contribution. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 02:53, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Dave Braunschweig: Thanks. Today was their first editing session. They have literally just started. We have reviewed Wikipedia's COI, NPOV, verifiability, citations, Wikimedia Commons and other policies and guidelines in detail. I think that what happened might have been related to the "red link" vs "blue link" conversation we had in class. This is a good group of students that take this assignment seriously. --Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 04:11, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
It was a page named CVT. The only content was lol . I deleted it as not having educational value. Glad to hear that it's a good group. I'm sure it will be fine. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 14:29, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Digital Media Concepts template

[edit source]

I've noticed that some of the pages your students have created get a surprising amount of search engine traffic - for example, Digital Media Concepts/2JZ Engine was viewed over 47,000 times last year! However, since these pages aren't always perfect and aren't being regularly updated, I'm concerned that some visitors may not be satisfied with what they find - especially for pages on topics which have changed since they were first written about, like Digital Media Concepts/Fortnite or Digital Media Concepts/Toby Fox.

To try to address this, I've created a new template, {{Digital Media Concepts}}, which can be placed at the top of these pages to add a notice that the page is a student project. Passing in a parameter with the name of an English Wikipedia article will include a link to that article in the notice.

I've already added this template to about a dozen of the highest traffic pages under this learning project, including a couple which have gotten some confused edits from passers-by. It doesn't urgently need to be added to other pages or to newly created ones - although it certainly wouldn't hurt if it were.

Omphalographer (discusscontribs) 01:54, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good. I added it to the page. Thanks! Ireicher2 (discusscontribs) 20:56, 28 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

You may want to advise Digital Media Concepts participants to avoid full capitalized titles

[edit source]

Hello, I assume that you are related to the Digital Media Concepts series. One of the recent creations in this series did not comply with our naming preferences (No full capitalizations). Therefore, I have renamed Digital Media Concepts/Digital Media Concepts/Jeff Bezos with custodian permissions. I have already explained the details to the creator (User talk:Mschuster0605‎). As written in Wikiversity_talk:Naming_conventions#Full_capitalization, full capitalization is considered to be shouting. You may want to advise the participants about our naming conventions (Wikiversity:Naming conventions). If you have further questions about the naming conventions, please let me know. Thank you for your participation in Wikiversity. MathXplore (discusscontribs) 08:47, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Digital Media Concepts -- Fall 2024

[edit source]

Hi, I"m thinking of replicating / running in parallel this digital media concepts for my course in Fall 2024 at SUNY Polytechnic Institute (Utica, NY) (Last fall I did wikiedu + wikiversity with mixed results). I wonder if we might think of options here? One would be for my fall students to basically add a folder to the existing project, and effectively replicate the assignment / tutorials as presented / modified. Thoughts? ~~~ Stevesuny (discusscontribs) 15:59, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Please replicate as you see fit. Thanks!
