This project is about The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and The Johns Hopkins University GLAM project.

Welcome to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the Johns Hopkins University WikiProject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the cultural sector, done with the students of the Master of Arts in Museum Studies.[1] This Wikiproject is done with the help of the Library of the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the MNAC Barcelona. Every student is required to create or expand an article about one of the outstanding works of Museu Nacional collection. To write the article you have to use published bibliography. For that, you'll have access to the Library of MNAC and time slots during the Seminar for work in the Library.[2]

Goals[edit]

The goals of this Wikiproject are:

  • Explore the possibilities of expanding Museum Communication strategy making available museum content on external platforms widely used.
  • Become an advanced user in Wiki environments, and other online tools for collaborative working.
  • Write an article on Wikipedia, on one of the topics mentioned in the list given below, using the museum's given resources available to students.
  • Discover the GLAMWiki project (GLAM is for Galleries, Libraries, Archives & Museums) that is ongoing in several cultural institutions worldwide

Johns Hopkins University[edit]

The Johns Hopkins University,[3] commonly referred to as Johns Hopkins, JHU, or simply Hopkins, is a private research university based in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Johns Hopkins maintains campuses in Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Italy; China and Singapore. The university was founded on January 22, 1876 and named for its benefactor, the philanthropist Johns Hopkins.[4] Daniel Coit Gilman was inaugurated as first president on February 22, 1876.[5]

Johns Hopkins pioneered the concept of the modern research university in the United States and has ranked among the world's top such universities throughout its history. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has ranked Johns Hopkins #1 among U.S. academic institutions in total science, medical and engineering research and development spending for 31 consecutive years.[6] As of 2011, thirty-seven Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with Johns Hopkins,[7] and the university's research is among the most cited in the world.[8]

MNAC Barcelona[edit]

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (English: "National Art Museum of Catalonia"), abbreviated as MNAC, is a museum of Catalan visual art located in Barcelona. It is housed in the Palau Nacional, built for the 1929 World's Fair. Situated on the Montjuïc hill at the end of Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, it was rehabilitated for the 1992 Summer Olympics. His director is Josep Serra i Villalba.

The MNAC embraces all the arts (sculpture, painting, objets d'art, drawing, engraving, posters, photography and coinage) and has the task of explaining the general history of Catalan art from the Romanesque period to the mid-twentieth century. In the case of the Romanesque and Gothic collections, this discourse is characterized by the Catalan provenance of most of the pieces, although, particularly in the Gothic, comparisons are made with art from other provenances. With regard to the Renaissance and Baroque collections, the works included lead to a more international discourse, with the work of great painters, such as El Greco, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Cranach, Rubens... The MNAC art collections from the end of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century are once again mostly made up of the work of Catalan artists, forming a discourse which explains Modernisme, Noucentisme and the Avant-garde, always taking into account all the arts.[9]

Requirements[edit]

Every student is required to

  1. Create a Wikipedia user account
  2. Create or expand an article about one of the outstanding works of MNAC's collection, to choose from the list below. To write the article you have to use published bibliography. For that, you'll have access to the Library of MNAC and time slots during the Seminar for work in the Library and in the Lab room. You may have a first look at the proposed artworks available at MNAC website (in English).
  3. Add References to the text
  4. Add Categories to the article
