Singapennae (transl.  The Woman Brave as a Lion) is an Indian Tamil television drama, starring Maneesha Mahesh, Darshak Gowda, and Amal Jith. It was directed by Dhanush Krishna. The series premiered on 9 October 2023 Sun TV from Monday to Saturday. It is also available on the digital platform Sun NXT. This series became one of the top most watched serials of Tamil Nadu.[1]

Plot[edit]

The series depicts the story of Anandhi, a brave village girl. Due to financial troubles in her family, Anandhi comes to Chennai to work in a garments company owned by Thillai Rajan. Anbu, who works as a supervisor in the company helps Anandhi to get a job in the same company. Due to a misunderstanding, Anandhi hates Anbu.

Anbu decides to approach Anandhi in a different way using a pseudonym "Azhagan" and gifted Anandhi's favourite bicycle to her with a courier. Now Anandhi gets curious to meet Azhagan and starts falling in love with him though she never knew who Azhagan is.

Anbu gets constantly humilated by Anandhi, so he never reveals that he is Azhagan to her. But soon Anandhi learns about the good nature of Anbu and apologizes to him. Now Anbu and Anandhi become friends but still Anbu hesitates to reveal to her that he is Azhagan. Meanwhile, Mahesh also develops romantic feelings for Anandhi but feels hesitant to confess his love to her.

Mithra, Mahesh's childhood friend who had loved Mahesh for a long time became the nemesis of Anandhi and stays with her in the same hostel. Mithra learns about "Azhagan" and asks her college friend Nandha to join the garments company to convince Anandhi to believe that he is "Azhagan". Finally Nandha gets exposed and arrested.

Now Anbu and Mahesh try to win the love of Anandhi without knowing that they both love the same girl.

Development[edit]

On July end 2023, Sun TV confirmed that it would distribute new Tamil serial, to be produced by Miracle Media.[2] The series shoot began in August 2023 and the first promo was released on 18 September 2023. The show is directed by Dhanush Krishna.[3]

Casting[edit]

Newcomer actress Maneesha Mahesh was cast as the female lead Anandhi,[4] Darshak Gowda was cast as the male lead role, marking his return after 'Arunthathi' . Amal Jith plays the Second male lead alongside her, marking his return after Amman. Actress Rama play of the role of Pechiyamma,[5] as mother of Anandhi. G. Gnanasambandam was cast as Azhagappan as father of Anandhi.

In October 2023, VJ Bavithra was cast as Mithira (Main Antogonist).[6] In November 2023, Rekha Angelina was cast as Manimegalai.[7]

Release[edit]

The first promo was released on 18 September 2023 featuring Maneesha Mahesh and Rama.[8] The second promo was unveiled on 30 September 2023,[9] and The third promo was unveiled on 2 October 2023, featuring Maneesha Mahesh tell the story and revealing the release date.[10]

The show started airing on Sun TV on 9 October 2023, replacing Vanathai Pola time slot.[11] This series was launched along with Zee Tamil's series Nala Damayanthi and Sandhya Raagam.[12]

Reception[edit]

The show got a TVR of 10.28 on launching week on 9 October 2023. On its Launch week it became the Top 5 serial of Sun TV.[13]

Trp Ratings[edit]

Singapennae became one of the most watched Tamil television programs in 2023. In January 2024, the series was the first most watched Tamil-language television series with 11.88 TVR[14]
