Talbingo Dam is located on the Tumut River in southern New South Wales. It is the largest dam in the Snowy Mountains Scheme, with the associated Tumut 3 Power Station also the largest in the project.[1] The dam is a 162 metre (530 feet) high rockfill structure with an upstream sloping silty clay core,[2] and on completion in 1971 was the highest dam in Australia.[1] The Tumut-3 Hydroelectric Power Station is located directly downstream of the dam wall. A pumping station at Tumut-3 also returns water to the reservoir for later generation use in periods of peak-demand.
