Biography

Early career

McGoldrick played junior volley ball for Wynnum Manly. He also played Rugby Union at the selective Brisbane State High School in Queensland.

2002

McGoldrick made his First Grade Debut for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in Round 6 v Newcastle at Toyota Park, April 19, 2002.

2003

Changing football codes, Ryan represented the New South Wales Waratahs in rugby union.

2004-2005

McGoldrick signed with the Cronulla Sharks once again. In late 2005, Ryan was one of 12 of the hottest players in the NRL that posed for the League Of Their Own 2006 calendar that was produced in the style of the famous Dieux du Stade calendars to raise money for the Koori Kids foundation.

2006-2007

In early 2006, Ryan was involved in a tug of war between SL club Castleford Tigers and NRL club Wests Tigers In the end, he arrived in Castleford a few days before their first match of the season. He, along with the rest of the squad, battled to keep Castleford in the top flight. Ryan suffered a hamstring injury towards the end of the 2006 season, but was forced to play due to lack of numbers. Unfortunately Castleford fell out of the elite competition on Sep 16 with 19 points. Ryan, despite interest from other clubs, signed a 2 year contract to stay with them until 2008, on the 26th of October 2006. McGoldrick played for the Tigers during the 2007 season, starting it playing in his less-preferred position of stand-off, which seemed to unsettle him. However as the season progressed, he managed to move into the centre role and began to show fantastic form.

He earned a call-up to represent the American (USA) national rugby league side in the World Cup qualifiers at the end of the season, featuring in their defeat to Samoa. His club's (Castleford Tigers) coach Terry Matterson is the assistant coach of the USA side.

2008

Mcgoldrick started the season at full back and earned the full back position due to some outstanding performances. But midway through the season McGoldrik played at halfback to cover for the injured Sherwin. He later signed a four year contract extension. During the course of the season Mcgoldrick made more errors than any other player in Superleague, and was second in the entire league for penalties (including 3 yellow cards).

On November 25, it was reported that McGoldrick was on the verge of signing for Wigan Warriors.[1]

2009

Ryan started 2009 in great form playing fullback. He was linking up well from the backline with Rangi Chase and Brent Sherwin. Mcgoldrick was fill in captain for a few games when Ryan Hudson got injured. Terry Matterson the Castleford coach stripped him of the captaincy when he was sin binned for mouthing at the ref in a game with Warrington Wolves When Sherwin got injured Mcgoldrick switched to play scrum half which affected his form towards the back end of the season. Sherwin is now back playing and Ryan has improved his form since moving back to full back.

2010

Ryan has played the majority of this season at Full back and has linked well coming into the attacking line with the Castleford half back pairing of Rangi Chase and Dean Widders
