At the core of the multi-billion dollar^[1] Pokémon media franchise of various electronic games, ongoing anime, several manga series, collectible trading card games, and other media are 493 distinctive fictional species classified as the titular Pokémon. Created by Satoshi Tajiri, Pokémon is one of Nintendo's flagship game franchises, which has sold over 143 million copies worldwide as of 2007.^[2] These creatures and entities reside throughout various locations of the fictional Pokémon universe and can be caught by humans designated as Pokémon Trainers often using devices called Poké Balls. These trainers use Pokémon for a variety of purposes, such as being pets and loyal companions and/or being pitted against other trained Pokémon in competitive Pokémon battles. Pokémon are potentially powerful and magical creatures that can employ a variety of talents such as generating fire or heat, martial arts, telekinesis, and so on. Through age and experience many of these species undergo a metamorphosis and transform into a similar but stronger species in a process referred to as Pokémon evolution.

This is a selected listing of twenty of the Pokémon species, arranged as they are in the main game series' National Pokédex.

Chatot

Chatot (ペラップ, Perappu, Perap in original Japanese language versions) can learn and speak human words (Known as Chatter). The rare ability to learn human words, It may or may not be able to comprehend what it is actually saying though, much like real parrots. If they gather, they all learn the same saying. It can also mimic sounds. When a Chatot learns its signature move Chatter, the trainer can record a custom call from the title menu. The sound is garbled to avoid the recording of obscenities.

Its head is shaped like a musical note and its tail like a metronome. Its body is covered with many multi-colored feathers giving it a resemblance to a black masked lovebird. Chatot can only be caught in the morning or during the day.

Spiritomb

Spiritomb (ミカルゲ, Mikaruge in original Japanese language versions), along with Sableye, shares the distinction of being one of only two Pokémon with no weakness. Since it is a combination Ghost/Dark type, no attack is "super effective" against it under normal circumstances. Moves like Foresight and the ability Scrappy can negate its immunity to Fighting and Normal, allowing opponents to hit the Fighting weakness of its Dark typing. Its ability, Pressure, doubles the PP cost of any moves used by a foe. This ability, combined with its resistances and wide movepool of defensive moves, makes it a highly effective "tank".

According to its Pokédex entry, Spiritomb is a single entity composed of 108 evil spirits. Spiritomb has a strange connection to the number 108, being 108 kilograms (238.1 lbs.), #108 in the Sinnoh Pokedex, and having 108 as its base stat in defense and special defense. The number 108 is sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism. The entry also mentions that it was bound to a fissure in an Odd Keystone as punishment for misdeeds done 500 years ago.

Champion Cynthia of the Sinnoh Pokémon League uses a Spiritomb in her team.

Gible

Gible (フカマル, Fukamaru) is the 4th generation rare Dragon type. Gible once lived in the tropics, but moved into caves to live off geothermal heat. Gible lives in tunnels it constructs inside warm caves. It prefers heat similar to that of a tropical climate. It nests in small, horizontal holes in cave walls. It pounces to catch prey that stray too close. Gible is one of the few Dragon/Ground Pokémon, making it weak to Ice- and Dragon-type moves. It is mostly a physical, speed Pokémon.

Gible Weight is 45.2 (20.5kg) Gible is 2'4 (0.7m)

Gible Learns 10 Moves by Leveling Up (Last one at Lv.37, Dragon Rush), 36 Moves by TM (4 Are HM), and has 10 Egg Moves.

Gabite

Gabite (ガバイト, Gabaito) is Dragon/Ground like Gible. Gabite evolves into Garchomp at level 48. There is a long-held belief that medicine made from its scales will heal even incurable illnesses. It habitually digs up and hoards gems in its nest. Its loot is constantly targeted by thieves and crooks.

Garchomp

Garchomp (ガブリアス, Gaburiasu, Gablias in original Japanese language versions) is the fourth-generation non-legendary Pokémon with high total stats (especially HP, Speed, and Attack); comparable to Metagross, Salamence, Tyranitar and Dragonite. It evolves from Gabite at Level 48. The Champion Cynthia of the Sinnoh Pokémon League has a Garchomp.

In the anime, Cynthia uses Garchomp in her battle against Paul, where it managed to defeat his team with relative ease.

Munchlax

Munchlax (ゴンベ, Gonbe in original Japanese language versions) is the pre-evolved form of Snorlax. It wolfs down its weight in food once a day, swallowing food whole with almost no chewing. It hides food under its long body hair. However, it sometimes forgets it has hidden the food there. Munchlax behaves quite opposite of its evolution, Snorlax, as it is somewhat hyperactive, though it is very similar with its eating patterns. It does not mind walking and running from place to place as it looks for food. Munchlax eats the most food of any Pokémon besides its evolution, Snorlax. It will eat nearly anything. It can rarely become full and will eat constantly, unlike Snorlax, who eats in between sleeping.

One can obtain a Munchlax by breeding two Snorlax with one holding a Full Incense, or by smearing honey on trees and waiting to see if it appears. However, it is the rarest Pokémon to catch by doing so. Wild Munchlax can only be found in honey trees in the games.

In the anime, May owned a Munchlax as a promo leading towards the next generation. For a normal type, Munchlax showed an unusual set of moves like the Fighting-type move Focus Punch and the Grass-type move Solarbeam.

It appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a Pokémon to emerge from a Poké Ball. Munchlax wanders around the stage and devours any item it comes across.

Riolu

Riolu (リオル, Rioru) is the pre-evolved form of Lucario. There is only one Egg from which Riolu evolves in the Diamond & Pearl games, which is given to you by a man called Riley (however some think he is a woman) upon completing the Iron Island maze and defeating the Galactic Grunts. It evolves through Happiness in the daytime (4am - 8pm). It is said in the Pokédex that it can use "aura" to project its emotions and feelings.

Lucario

Template:Pokeinfoboxsmall Lucario (ルカリオ, Rukario), known as the "Aura" species of Pokémon, are the evolution of Riolu. They have the ability to sense and read auras emanating from humans and other Pokémon, allowing them to understand their thoughts and movements, and understand human speech. ^[3][4] Lucario has a devout following within several online gaming communities. It has since become a popular Pokémon, also one of the most recognised.

Lucario appears in the eighth Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, where he is a servant to a nobleman named Sir Aaron during a time of war. Being close friends, Aaron traps Lucario in a magic staff in order to save him, though Lucario just thinks that Aaron betrayed him, so he completely loses his trust for humans. After being released by Ash Ketchum, he begins to trust him, eventually learns that Aaron meant to save him, and sacrifices himself in order to save the Tree of Beginning. In the ending credits he was seen eating chocolate with Sir Aaron; this was not a flashback, as he did not know what chocolate was until he met Max.

Lucario also appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an unlockable character.^[5] He has the unique ability to increase the damage and knockback of his attacks proportionately to the damage he has taken. In the Subspace Emissary, he battles with Meta Knight at the top of the ice mountain. The player can choose to fight as Meta Knight or Lucario. The two of them make a truce, and enter the Halberd. Once inside they team up with Solid Snake. All three of them were able to reclaim the Halberd. In the Pokémon series, Force Palm is a giant hand that slaps and possibly paralizes the opponent, but in Brawl, it is just a beam of aura.

Hippopotas

Hippopotas (ヒポポタス, Hipopotasu) can be found in the Ruin Maniac's cave. It is fairly rare, though will appear more often as the length of the cave increases. This Pokémon and its evolutions have quite different gender forms. The female has a brown replacing the color on the snout and on its body, while the male is a yellowish tan. Unlike the aquatic animal the Hippopotamus, which is what's it's loosely based on, Hippopotas lives in deserts, and hates getting wet; however, it is one of the few non-water ground type Pokémon that can learn Water Pulse.

Hippowdon

Hippowdon (カバルドン, Kabarudon) is the evolved form of Hippopatas. Sand appears to be coming out of the holes on its back. It's mouth can reach over 7 feet across. It is also mentioned, in a bookcase in Harbor Inn in Canalave City, that this Pokémon created the deserts of the world, but the spirit of the desert is Flygon, and the heat was created by Camerupt. Males are colored yellow, while females are colored black. It is interesting to note that males are yellow, so that in their desert environments, they have trouble finding each other to fight. The female is colored black for the opposite reason, so she is easy to find.

Skorupi

Skorupi (スコルピ, Sukorupi) is the pre-evolved form of Drapion, and unlike its adult form is a Bug/Poison type. Skorupi seems to resemble a standard scorpion, only with 4 legs, instead of 8. Its tail is used for gripping prey and injecting poison into them. It ambushes prey by hiding in the sand and waiting patiently.

Skorupi has 2 abilities: Battle Armor, preventing critical hits on Skorupi, and Sniper (a newer ability) , which triples the damage of an attack instead of doubling it during the case of a critical hit.

Drapion

Drapion (ドラピオン) Classified as the "Ogre Scorpion" Pokémon, Skorupi grows much larger and more dangerous with its evolution. This Pokémon's resemblance to the scorpion hasn't been much increased, as it still has only four legs and two arms. These arms are mounted on the sides of its head, which has a full 360-degree field of view. This gives Drapion an impressive range of attack. Drapion only has 1 weakness, to Ground types.

Croagunk

Croagunk (グレッグル, Guregguru, Greggle in original Japanese language versions) uses the poison sacks in its cheeks to communicate with others. Its move Poison Jab has a tendency to stun Pokémon and people. Male Croagunk differ from female Croagunk in that the white bands on their chests are lower than in the female, as well as the black band on both arms.

In the anime, Team Rocket leaves a Croagunk in the episode "Gymbaliar". Brock later befriends it and captures it. Now whenever Brock starts flirting with pretty girls, Croagunk uses a weaker Poison Jab on him and drags him away, taking up a role played by Misty and Max in earlier sagas. During the episode in which Cynthia makes her debut, Croagunk is stopped from Jabbing Brock when Cynthia glances at him, Croagunk then looks momentarily embarrassed, as Cynthia seems to be saying that she doesn't mind Brock's flirting. Brock's Croagunk also appears to be a female because its chest stripes are higher up on its body, just like the female Croagunk from the video games.

Toxicroak

Toxicroak (ドクロッグ, Dokuroggu, Dokurog in original Japanese language versions). Toxicroak, like Croagunk, is based on the poison dart frog. Toxicroak has knuckle talons and, instead of cheek pouches, a large vocal sac. Toxicroak has large leg and arm muscles, necessary for jumping and punching. Commander Saturn owns a female Toxicroak. These Pokémon prey on Drapion, and vice versa.

Carnivine

Carnivine (マスキッパ, Masukippa, Muskippa in original Japanese language versions) resemble venus fly traps; in fact, the Japanese name for this Pokémon is derived from the scientific name of the plant. Capable of levitation, it attracts its prey with its sweet-smelling saliva, then chomps down. It takes a whole day to eat its prey. Its diet consists chiefly of bugs (presumably weak ones, as ironically, Bug-type attacks are super effective against Carnivine).

In the Anime, James from Team Rocket has a Carnivine who always bites his head. This Carnivine is one of James' childhood Pokémon friends whose Poké Ball was hidden inside a box of bottle caps at his family's cottage in the Sinnoh Region. And like James' two Pokémon before it, Carnivine has a tendency to affectionately attack James when released from its Poké Ball. This follows the pattern of his earlier Grass-Type Pokémon, Victreebel and Cacnea, who used to attack him.

Finneon

Finneon (ケイコウオ, Keikouo in original Japanese language versions) is known as the Wing Fish. After long exposure to sunlight, the patterns on its tail fins shine vividly when darkness arrives.

Lumineon

Lumineon (ネオラント, Neoranto, Neorant in original Japanese language versions). Lumineon evolves from Finneon at level 31 and can be caught with a Super Rod where Finneon dwell. It attracts other Pokémon to eat when its tail fin shines.

Mantyke

Mantyke (タマンタ, Tamanta in original Japanese language versions) is the pre-evolved form of Mantine, both resembling a manta ray. The backs of this species resemble smiling faces, a trait shared with Spinarak. It can evolve into Mantine if it levels up with a Remoraid also in the trainer's party (the Remoraid is not lost, so a new one strangely appears on the new Mantine).

Snover

Snover (ユキカブリ, Yukikaburi, Yukikabli in original Japanese language versions) is a "frosted tree Pokémon," that first appeared in the 4th generation of Pokémon. Snover is a small, tree-like Pokémon that appears mid to late game. On its head it has a white hat-like structure resembling a mountain with three peaks.

It is a common sight in the snowy regions of Mt. Coronet, and is used by the 7th Gym Leader from Sinnoh, Candice at level 38.

In the spring, frozen candy-like berries grow around its stomach which are similar to frozen treats. Because of its lack of human contact, Snover is known to be boldly inquisitive. Male and female Snover vary in appearance by their stomach's pattern, with the male having an extra brown zigzag. Snover, and its evolution Abomasnow, is a unique Grass/Ice type, giving it many different abilities than most Grass or Ice types. Grass/Ice type is usually not considered to be especially good, as 7 different types are "super effective" against it, including Fire dealing 4x damage.

The ability Snow Warning is also unique to Snover's line, and causes the weather to change to hail when Snover is brought into battle. This hail does not disappear over time, but must be overridden by another weather changing move or ability.

Abomasnow

Abomasnow (ユキノオー, Yukinoō, Yukinooh in original Japanese language versions) is the evolved form of Snover and, like its previous evolution, is a "Frost Tree", and has Grass/Ice typing. Its ability, Snow Warning, creates an everlasting hailstorm that grants its strongest attack, Blizzard, perfect accuracy. It can be found on the peak of Mt. Coronet and is used by the seventh Gym Leader of Snowpoint City, Candice.
