The Barisha raid was a United States military operation in Barisha, Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria. According to US officials including President Donald Trump, the leader of ISIS Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed.[5]
Raid
On 26 October 2019 U.S. Joint Special Operations Command's (JSOC) Delta Force conducted a raid into the Idlib province of Syria on the border with Turkey that allegedly resulted in the death of al-Baghdadi.[6] The raid was launched based on a CIA Special Activities Division's intelligence effort that located the leader of ISIS.[7] The Syrian Democratic Forces provided direct and extensive support to the operation.[8]
Casualties
According to SOHR, 9 people were killed including one child, two women and some high-ranking ISIS leaders.[4] One Guardians of Religion Organization commander was believed to be among the casualties.[3]
Reactions
International reactions
- Turkey – Senior aide to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Fahrettin Altun, stated to Reuters: "Turkey was proud to help the United States, our NATO ally, bring a notorious terrorist to justice ... We remember today Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s civilian victims and our military heroes, who lost their lives to protect the world from Daesh (Islamic State) terrorists."[9]
- United Kingdom – Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the death of Baghdadi an "important moment" but said that the "fight [against ISIL] was not over."[10]
