Dog (domestic dog)

The Bắc Hà dog (Vietnamese: chó Bắc Hà), is a medium size spitz dog breed and one of Vietnam's Four Great National Dogs (Vietnamese: tứ đại quốc khuyển).[1][2] This dog is primarily used a hunter and guard dog by the Hmong people in northern Vietnam, especially in the Bắc Hà district and Si Ma Cai district of Lào Cai province.[2][3] While not FCI recognized, the Bắc Hà dog is recognized by the Vietnam Kennel Association.[4]

History:

Hmong Migration Routes

While much of the the Bắc Hà dog's history is speculative, they are thought to be descended from heavier-coated mountain dogs of southern China who accompanied the Hmong in their migration to Vietnam.[5][2] Hmong traditions and legends indicate that they originated near the Yellow River region of China.[6] The Hmong people were subjected to persecution and genocide by the Qing dynasty in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and many fled to the mountains of northern Vietnam.[5]

In October 2020, a Bắc Hà dog named Sói won the Vietnamese Native Breeds Championship Dog Show.[3]

Characteristics

Bắc Hà dogs have a thick double coat comprised of a stiffer, moderately long outer coat and a wooly undercoat.[2] It is preferred to have a longer neck ruff that resembles a lion's mane, although this trait is not universal.[7] They also have small triangular ears which may be either button ears and prick ears.[2] Button ears are the standard while prick ears are not.[4] Bắc Hà dogs come in all colors except merle.[2] Bắc Hà dogs have a slim head with a long muzzle and a round and broad forehead.[8]

The Bac Ha dogs come in different colors such as yellow, brindle, black, white, brownish-red, and gray.

Intelligent, independent, and brave, the Bắc Hà dogs is aloof with strangers.[3][2][7] In their territory, they are alert without signs of shyness nor fear. The breed has strong instincts to protect the owner's property.[2] They are hardy in harsh conditions and thrive with minimal care.[7]
