Merino

Merino

Merino is a breed of sheep from Spain and Portugal. Its wool is regarded as the noblest for use in clothing and decorative items. The Merino race resulted from the evolution of the Merino population that existed in the south of Portugal in the early 20th century. It was a very heterogenous ethnic group, where black animals prevailed. At that time the main source of income of the sheep farm was the wool that presented an excellent quality in the animals of this breed. The production of wool motivated crosses with improved breeds such as the early merino, a French breed synthesized from the Merino de Rambouillet. The native breeds, namely the Merino White breed, are characterized by their extraordinary rusticity, translated in a perfect adaptation to the edaphoclimatic conditions and in a good use of the natural resources of the region. This breed originated in the Alentejo region and in 1999 had about 22,000 animals registered in the Genealogical Book, and in 2007 it had 17,000 registered animals, with a total of 40 breeders.
