Synopsis

The 2019 roll out of new rules on television tariffs started half a decade of struggle for India’s broadcast sector.

The otherwise fiercely divided broadcasting sector is solidly united on one point: the new tariff order (NTO) implemented by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in 2019 has caused enormous distress to the industry and must be rolled back without delay. In fact, Anil Kumar Lahoti's first big challenge as the newly appointed chairman of the TRAI is to clean up the mess created by the introduction of the NTO and its various iterations.
