Alphabet City Chronicles Exhibition by Artist Manuel Matias
In 2019, Manuel Matias turned to creating miniature tableaus of nostalgic and disappearing streetscapes. His tiny replica of a hyperrealistic garbage can that conjured the sights (and smells) of his childhood was the first of an ever-expanding series of sculptures that grow from kernels of memory embellished with humor, activism, and wry social commentary. Alphabet City Chronicles invites viewers both to imagine entering Matias’ miniature worlds and to reflect on their own memories and experiences.

O’tá:ra Exhibition by Artist Natasha Smoke Santiago
Akwesasne Mohawk artist Natasha Smoke Santiago has spent the last two decades mastering traditional Haudenosaunee pottery techniques. Her unique work incorporates storytelling, activism, and the exploration of native foodways, including experiments with seedkeeping and collaborations with Indigenous chefs. The exhibition’s title, O’tá:ra (pronounced oh-da-law) takes its name from a Mohawk phrase that means both “our clay” and “our clan,” a testament to clay’s foundational role in Haudenosaunee culture.

Jewels from the Fire: 20th Century Enamels Exhibition
Because they use similar materials and processes, enamels and ceramics share a close relationship. Enamellists work on metal surfaces instead of clay, creating everything from functional jewelry and dinnerware to wall-mounted panels. They use pigments called enamels in the process, which behave similarly to ceramic glazes. Comprising mineral pigments and a glassy powder called frit, enamels can be painted as a liquid or sifted and sprinkled onto a surface while dry. Enameled metal is then fired in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 1400°F to 1650°F. Artists often add additional layers of enamel after cooling and fire their pieces multiple times, which creates seductive, jewel-like surfaces.

Clayscapes- Exhibition
Clayscapes is a tribute to clay’s ubiquitous presence in our lives, and to the powerful metaphorical and spiritual role that it can play. The Everson’s famous collection of ceramics is filled with works that explore the landscape—from artist Robert Arneson’s monumental celebration of California’s mountainous landscape to Uruguayan-born Lidya Buzio’s earthy vessels adorned with the skyline of her adopted home in New York City. The collection contains many commercially produced souvenir plates and pitchers meant to commemorate and memorialize specific places. These wares are a distinctive part of the Museum’s collection, and they provide inspiration for contemporary artists such as Paul Scott, who makes commemorative plates that reflect the ways that humans have altered the landscape and exploited its resources.

A Day Without A Clock
Is it possible to live a year, a week, or even a day of everyday life without looking at a clock? This is the question that DeepTime Collective (Amanda Leigh Evans and Tia Kramer) asked themselves at the beginning of their year-long residency at the Everson Museum, which began in June 2023. Through conversation and collaboration with diverse Syracuse community partners, the artists realized that the tyranny of the atomic clock dictates how we relate to ourselves, our labor, the land, and each other in the modern world.
What is time without a clock?
This exhibition follows DeepTime Collective’s immersive museum-wide day event, A Day Without a Clock, taking place on June 6, 2024. The exhibition features ceramic alternative timekeeping devices, ephemera from performances that visualize the shape of time, and artwork generated during a day of participatory events coauthored with diverse community partners. When combined, these alternative timekeeping objects and participatory activities reorient our relationship to time.

Off The Rack Exhibition
Off the Rack is the happy by-product of a major renovation of the Everson’s on-site art storage.
As hundreds of paintings and framed works are displaced from their racks while renovations take place, the public has an unprecedented opportunity to view objects that have been in deep storage for years, never-before-seen recent acquisitions, and some perennial favorites — all hung together salon-style in our exhibition galleries.
This smorgasbord of paintings and works on paper showcases the breadth and depth of the Museum’s collections and provides a glimpse into the world of collections management and care.

Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival
Legendary headliners will anchor each night of the festival on the Wegmans Stage in the Landmark. Friday, vocalist Shayna Steele performs to close the show, the versatile singer with tour experience with Rihanna, Bette Midler, Chris Botti and Snarky Puppy, as well as Broadway shows and symphony dates. Saturday, The Family Stone takes the stage to celebrate the five decade-plus legacy that changed soul music forever. The new band is led by original member and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Martini and includes second generation band members Phunne Stone and Swang Stewart. The group is presented in association with Tom Honan and Live Space Entertainment.
The main stage lineup also includes the smooth jazz guitar and sax double bill of Blake Aaron and Will Donato; dean of the west coast jazz trumpet scene Clay Jenkins with the Lamb, Mack, and Sorgen Trio; Brass Inc, high energy horn band and regional favorite; and CNY Jazz legacy Mike Kammers, returning from Brooklyn to his hometown with his entire MK Groove Orchestra.
A second stage in the mezzanine lounge will alternate with the main stage and feature two unique emerging acts. The upstate-based Tres Guitars perform Friday, and the Columbian duo of Eva Peroni and Fabi will provide exotic Latin electronica on Saturday.

I've Learned To Hold Myself Softly: Cali M. Banks
Comprised of 30 images and one film, Banks has created an exhibition with Syracuse as her muse.
She began documenting her hometown of Syracuse in November 2022. When she traveled back to places of importance during my "coming of age" years, she realized many places of both solace and nostalgia have been demolished or abandoned. Banks started to rework this experimental, documentary project with ideas of "teardown towns" and blind tradition. She utilizes self-portraiture, still-lives, and architecture that is specific to Syracuse, and symbolism depicting bodies, ritual, and sensuality, which in turn uses nonverbal communication as a way to emphasize tradition. This project also explores the complexities of layers of existence through materialistic remnants and the essence of non-tangibility. With a rapidly changing hometown as the core of the work, Banks is capturing attention with a familiar setting to the community.

Crime of the Century: Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Thaw, and the Murder of Stanford White
Evelyn Nesbit first captivated Americans with her beauty and charm, then became the sympathetic focus of the Crime of the Century in 1906, following the murder of her former paramour, famed architect Stanford White, by her unhinged millionaire husband, Harry K. Thaw. The staged reading of a new play by Syracuse playwright Garrett Heater mixes early musical theater sensationalism with the tragedy of Nesbit's abuse by men, money, and the media.
