The blood shows all stages of ana?mia, from the mildest to thegrave pseudoleuksemic anaemia of von Jaksch, which some authorstrace to syphilitic influences. The bones are affected with an osteochondritis, already described.This may appear in the first few weeks or at a much later period. Itmanifests itself by pain in moving the joints. The infant cries whenhandled. The mother notices that one or the other arm lies motionlessat the side, and that every attempt to move it causes pain. Parrotdescribed this condition as a pseudoparalysis. At the junction of theepiphysis and diaphysis at the lower end of the humerus or radius thebone may be swollen and painful. As a rule, the process affects theupper extremity on one side only, but in severe cases both the upperand lower extremities may be involved. I have known instances in which prolonged obser-vation was necessary to clear up the case. A very characteristic but not common affection of the bones isthe so-called dactylitis syphilitica (Fig. 91). This may appear asearly as the fourth week, and may be associated with swelling of theepiphyses of the long bones. It consists of a fusiform swelling ofthe phalanges of one or more fingers. According to Taylor, this isprimarily a gummatous infiltration of the skin, the periosteum, bone,and epiphyseal cartilage. In another form the periosteum and the Fig. 91.
