Is there a way to constrain Commons API Qid-query results to some geospatial region?

[edit]

NOTE: I want to lookup a Qid WITH a geo-constraint.

This geospatial region could be a: "geolocation + radius", geobox, or some country ID.

Eg. can the following query for "castle" (or any other <Qid>!) in some way be constrained by a geospatial region? [1]

If this is not yet possible, please consider adding support for it :)

Thanks in advance! Waldenn (talk) 23:47, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The vast majority of Commons files lack geospatial data.
Also, if I were working on something like this myself, I'd definitely implement it as a minimum and maximum latitude and longitude, not a distance from a particular point. The latter is a much more expensive calculation, without any great gain over the former. - Jmabel ! talk 00:52, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Waldenn: I haven't tried it myself, but mw:Extension:GeoData does allow searching near a specified location, both via API and mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Geo_Search. MKFI (talk) 06:42, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Special:Search/castle nearcoord:10km,51.5082,-0.076198 Enhancing999 (talk) 15:40, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm aware of this API, but this does not allow for constraining the Qid-based query results! I would like to see articles for topic <Qid> around a certain location, not just the small list of types mentioned on that page. --Waldenn (talk) 20:44, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Articles"? sounds like a question for Wikipedia or Wikidata. Enhancing999 (talk) 22:10, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I use both in this project. So both Wikidata items + Wikipedia articles. With a preference to display the latter when they refer to the same entity. Waldenn (talk) 17:27, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading Photograph - with a CC BY-NC-SA license

[edit]

Dear Gentle People,

I'm trying to upload a photograph with this license: CC BY-NC-SA

But, I can't find a way to do it. The licenses offered with a radio button don't include those restrictions, and I don't know what it wants when it says "Enter a different license in wikitext format."

Please help.

Thanks,

Ellis408 (talk) 00:12, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ellis408: Noncommercial-only licenses are not allowed on Commons. Please read COM:L. Abzeronow (talk) 00:24, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why is it talked about in the upload process, that you can have an image with CC BY-NC-SA tags? Is it different in Wikipedia? Ellis408 (talk) 01:59, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Meanwhile, I started a DR the other day for a photo which has been on the site since 2005 with exactly such a license. Not sure what we're accomplishing here if we're not proactively addressing our problems.RadioKAOS (talk) 03:09, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to get a photo of Aldous Huxley, Christopher Isherwood and Swami Prabhabananda in some license, without throwing into public domain. Is there a way?
Ellis408 (talk) 00:49, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Huxley died in 1963 so this photograph is definitely old. When was it taken and who was the photographer? Abzeronow (talk) 01:02, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was taken in the 1950s - not sure what year. You can see it here: https://mediaetpotere.wordpress.com/2015/04/15/aldous-huxley-e-a-vedanta/
It's owned by the Vedanta Society of Southern California. I've contacted them to get permission to use on Wikipedia, but I don't think they will allow it to go to public domain. Ellis408 (talk) 02:02, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, I think the photograph is from the 1940s possibly around 1945 when Vedanta For The Western World was first published. Secondly, what we'd need a license that we'd accept from the copyright holder which may be Vedanta Society of Southern California, a permission to use on Wikipedia is not enough. Thirdly, it's possible that this photograph is public domain by formalities if it was published in the 1940s. @Clindberg: Abzeronow (talk) 02:13, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you are contacting someone to get permission, be sure to go through the COM:VRT process to have them send an email directly. Relayed permissions usually aren't enough. As for the copyright, we would need to know when it was published. If it was a private photo only made public relatively recently, it could well still be under copyright and you'd need a license. If it was published in a book in in the 1940s, there is a chance it is public domain. But we would need to know more about when the photo was published, to really know. Figuring out if something is public domain can be quite complicated, at least anything under 120 years old. Carl Lindberg (talk) 02:38, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to upload SVG file: "Files of the MIME type "application/xml" are not allowed to be uploaded."

[edit]

I have a SVG Logo that validates with every validator I tried and displays nicely with any editor. But now when I try to upload it here, I get the stupid error message "Files of the MIME type "application/xml" are not allowed to be uploaded.". The file name ends in .svg, so why is it not accepting it as SVG? Of course an SVG file is an XML, what else? What can I do to circumvent this problem? Thanks, Cesni-logo-upload (talk) 18:35, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cesni-logo-upload: could you reproduce the header of the SVG element of the source here? (e.g. something like <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="900" height="600">) Or possibly if the file is small, reproduce the whole file? - Jmabel ! talk 19:28, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the start:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<svg xmlns="https://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="354" height="91" viewBox="0 0 354 91">
I tried without the XML header as well, but with the same result. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cesni-logo-upload (talk • contribs) 21:22, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's weird. Yes, I would get rid of that header; really surprised that didn't do it. - Jmabel ! talk 05:10, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, very. Even more weird is that uploading the same file from the same computer to https://svgcheck.toolforge.org/ results in an valid result showing the correct image. Cesni-logo-upload (talk) 08:18, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
try to change xmlns="https://www.w3.org/2000/svg" to xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" if it is picky because that. -- Zache (talk) 08:50, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do you delete or delete messages in my User Talk

[edit]

Hi, I would like to know how you delete or delete the messages in my User Talk Bolitachan (talk) 08:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bolitachan: Best is not to delete messages, but to archive them. You can use the archive bot for that. Yann (talk) 09:12, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information, but I have a question just out of curiosity: why is it better to archive messages instead of deleting them? Bolitachan (talk) 03:48, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Archived messages continue to be readily searchable, and they are also somewhat easier to browse.
FWIW, I myself usually just delete the basic "something's missing" warnings from bots (e.g. I failed to note a source) once I've remedied the situation, but I archive pretty much everything else from my user talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 05:40, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merging video history

[edit]

Hi. Is it possible to "move" a video "into" another one and merge their edit histories? I uploaded a version of better quality (File:2016-04-04 Venezuela - Operación Liberación del Pueblo.webm) of an existing video (File:Venezuela Operación Liberación del Pueblo.webm), but other than that they're duplicates. Many thanks in advance. NoonIcarus (talk) 11:36, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

They are both uplaoded by you. Are you really concerned to merge the histories rather than keep them in two separate places (it can be done, but it's a pain to do)? If not, the old version can just be turned into a redirect. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: If it isn't against Commons policy to have duplicate files, even with different resolutions, I don't mind keeping both files, especially if a merge is so difficult. Maybe I could also add {{Other versions}} in the description? I'm up for whatever seems best in this case. --NoonIcarus (talk) 14:04, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NoonIcarus: {{Other versions}} could be OK, but I don't see what is so interesting in https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Venezuela_Operaci%C3%B3n_Liberaci%C3%B3n_del_Pueblo.webm&action=history that it is important to make sure it is in the history of the preferred version. The redirect I proposed would be exactly equivalent to how we handle the situation when we redirect a low-res version of a picture to a high-res version of the same picture. What is so different about a video? - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Not really interesting, but rather thinking about what the normal procedure would be with an article in the Spanish Wikipedia. --NoonIcarus (talk) 00:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NoonIcarus: I would think it makes more sense to follow the normal procedure for redirecting a scaled-down duplicate on Commons, since that appears to be what we are dealing with. I'm going to take the liberty of handling it that way. - Jmabel ! talk 04:20, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Go ahead, no worries :) --NoonIcarus (talk) 09:42, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: I wanted to let know that there's a similar situation with the videos File:2017-07-06 Venezuela Libertad de expresión y democracia.webm and File:2017-07-07 - Venezuela - Libertad de expresión y democracia.webm. I tried doing the redirect manually, but from what I gather this needs to be done by an admin.
I also wanted to comment about the videos File:2015-10-19 Venezuela - Libertad de Expresión.webm and File:2015-10-19 Venezuela - Libertad de Expresión.ogv. They're duplicates and have the same resolution, but the difference is their extension: .webm and .ogv, respectively. What should be done in this case? Thank you very much in advance. --NoonIcarus (talk) 18:05, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
File:2017-07-06 Venezuela Libertad de expresión y democracia.webm done. No view on the other thing you raise except to ask whether one is to be preferred to the other. - Jmabel ! talk 19:54, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thanks! I have no preference on any of the duplicate files, although my natural conclusion is that it is "helpful" to have different file extensions. --NoonIcarus (talk) 23:18, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Accidentally renamed page instead of using Move Category function

[edit]

Hello, I accidentally moved the category Category:Players_winners_of_the_UEFA_Europa_Conference_League to Category:Player_winners_of_the_UEFA_Conference_League instead of going through the Move category procedures (even though this should be an uncontroversial change). It is not clear to me how to undo this move. Can someone please help? Thank you. Coining (talk) 01:02, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Coining: are you saying that the move was erroneous and should be undone, or that we should move the content? The latter seems to make more sense to me, but you refer to undoing the move. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the latter makes more sense, if that is an option. Coining (talk) 02:16, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Best way to mass upload files

[edit]

With the 50 files per upload limit, and extremely slow interface for uploading, I feel there must be a better way for mass uploading files that I am not aware of. Is there such an option? It is often quit difficult to fill in th ncessary information with the slow interface especially when it cannot show the coordinates of where the photo was taken Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 11:29, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I recently learned that it is possible to identify subjects in pictures with Wikidata items in file notes (Template:Q). I know that a search will throw results related to the file's source code and description, but I was wondering if there was a "cleaner" searcher to look images about a specific person (or Wikidata item). Many thanks in advance, NoonIcarus (talk) 14:01, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@NoonIcarus: not sure what you mean here by "throw", nor do I follow what you are asking for. Something that would somehow (even for images not tagged with the relevant Q-item or category) be able to eliminate other people of the same name? That doesn't seem possible. Could you describe systematically what you would want the search to include and exclude? - Jmabel ! talk 16:35, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Yes, sorry. In this case, I'm thinking about searching files that depict a specific person. I know this can be done through other means, such as categories and descriptions, so I'm wondering if there's a specific search query for Q-items. --NoonIcarus (talk) 16:39, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NoonIcarus: So you'd want it to pick up "depicts" for that Q-item, explicit use of {{Q}} in the Wikitext, presumably any category linked from that Q-item and... anything else? The category part can get tricky, because we'd have no easy way to know that Category:Barack Obama in 2010 is desired as part of a search for Barack Obama (Q76), but Category:Obama Foundation isn't: we don't have anything to distinguish the nature of one category as likely to contain images of the man and the other not. Or am I still misunderstanding? - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: For the most part, yeah: only pick up the depiction of said Q-item. The use of the Q-item and the category in the file is not "mandatory" for the search. I've figured that the use of {{Q}} can make this easier, but I also understand if there isn't a specific way and other means for searching are better. --NoonIcarus (talk) 17:47, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@NoonIcarus: The tool View it! lets you search for files that depict a given Wikidata item, like Q76. The tool depends on structured data, specifically relevant files being annotated with depicts statements. Lovelano (talk) 23:33, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lovelano: This is quite similar to what I was looking for, thank you! I will take a look at it. --NoonIcarus (talk) 16:11, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I tried to upload a new picture to Gregg Bissonette's page and it took me through all the steps and said thank for contributing but the picture is still an old picture. Can someone help let me know what I did wrong? Thank you!! Mike Drums (talk) 23:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mike Drums: I take it you are asking about a cross-wiki upload from Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons. File:Gregg-bisonnette.webp was successfully uploaded, though I believe your claim that it is in the public domain is incorrect. It has not been used in any article, and I would recommend against using it unless you can justify the claim that it is PD. What is the basis for that claim? - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Im going to be honest and say I'm sure what I claimed. Totally new to all this so any info is helpful info. Mike Drums (talk) 00:12, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums: Was File:Gregg-bisonnette.webp really published "prior to January 1, 1929"? I tagged it as a copyvio.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:23, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums In short, the default assumption is that any random picture, perhaps especially of living people, you find online is under some sort of copyright and you can't upload them on Commons. There are exceptions, put they are rare. You can upload pics on Commons of Gregg Bissonette you have taken yourself with your own camera, and so can other people, like his friends and co-workers, or just see him perform. He can upload selfies on Commons if he likes. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:16, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I had made some edits on Gregg's page and sent them to him. He asked me if I could change the picture on the main page from the photo shoot he did with the drum company Drumeo earlier this year.
How can I get the picture in question put up?? Thank you. Mike Drums (talk) 12:16, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums: Have the copyright holder send permission via VRT or post it.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:59, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for indulging me with my lack of knowledge. So I relayed that info to Gregg and he just sent me a personal pic from his phone that his daughter took of him. Being that he gave me permission can I use what he sent me??? Thanks for the help. Mike Drums (talk) 17:54, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If his daughter took it, she owns the copyright, and can go through VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 18:34, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums Simplest, for you and us, is that his daughter registers an account and uploads it here [2]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:13, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So the pictures of him are for work purposes and promotions. He literally has drumstick in his hands. One was actually taken at a work session.
According to copyrightable work "made for hire" a picture taken for work purposes would belong to the person hiring/requestion the pictures for work to be taken. Especially being that it was his phone being used to take the pictures. "The commissioning party is considered the author and owns the copyrights to the images rather than the photographer."
So this is what I have found about copyrights.
Is there a way I can get some help and get it resolved and the picture put up??
Thank you. Mike Drums (talk) 22:20, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the U.S., "work for hire" almost never applies when you just pay a photographer to come take pictures for you. It's more something that arises when an employee does photography as part of their job. For example, on a "work for hire" basis, a photo studio might own the copyrights of the photos taken professionally by the photographers who work for them. But that's not what we are talking about here. Unless there was a formal employment situation that mentioned transfer of copyrights (very unlikely) or a specific, written transfer of copyright (slightly more likely, but VRT would need to see a scan of the document), copyright is going to belong to the photographer or (if they were part of a studio/agency) the photography company. That is who we need to have go through the COM:VRT process to grant a license. If it was his own daughter, and you are in touch, that should be simple. - Jmabel ! talk 23:16, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The picture of him was at the beach with drumsticks in his hands. That's what he does for a living. Not of him and a dog or something. But ok. The fact that a dad asked his daughter to take pic's for his own use for his business has to get permission from his daughter to use pictures of himself on his phone is asinine. The policing has gone to some ppl's heads it seems. Mike Drums (talk) 23:49, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Last question/attempt. If he got written permission from his daughter, would that be sufficient?? Thanks. Mike Drums (talk) 00:21, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums: FWIW, you may careful adherence to copyright law "asinine", but if you want to understand why we "cross the Ts and dot the Is", have a look at Commons:Copyleft trolling. But that is off topic, and if you want to discuss it, please start another thread.
If you don't want to do what Gråbergs suggested above (daughter opens an account, uploads it herself) then by far the simplest thing to do at this point would be for his daughter to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant a specific license by sending an email that is clearly from her (also, it's a good idea for her to CC you on the email so you can stay in the loop). If for some reason it is difficult for her to send an email she could put the equivalent on paper and sign it, as long as she specifies a license and is clear what photo she is talking about. Then you could make a digital image of that and email that to the VRT. The bid advantage of her sending the email is that if anything is unclear, this gives the VRT the chance to write back and clarify the matter. - Jmabel ! talk 04:44, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand protocol. The fact that If you ask someone to take a picture of you with your phone that the person that pushed a button ie; an 8 year old child or strangers on a vacation, now owns the copyright to the picture on your property.
Just seems bizarre to me.
So I’m going to see him in about 3 weeks at a drum show. I told him I can take new pictures and go from there.
What specifically do I need to prove that I actually took them next month?
Thanks. And I will read the copyright info.
Nothing personal. Just, to me, doesn’t make a bit of sense. Mike Drums (talk) 17:02, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums: If you are uploading images you take yourself, probably nothing needs to be proven. We generally assume good faith on that unless there is strong evidence to the contrary (e.g. a very unlikely combination of locations or of cameras over a person's ostensibly "own" work; images that appear to be screen grabs; images that were already published and credited to someone else; etc.). Occasionally, user with no prior uploads and little, if any, prior participation in Wikimedia projects posts materials that seem very unlikely to be their own work (e.g. a formal-looking portrait of a head of state, or something that puts them right in the middle of a breaking news story) and we might require that they go through the VRT process to clarify who they are and how they had this access. I photo of a moderately famous drummer is not going to be that sort of issue. - Jmabel ! talk 22:20, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Thanks.
When the time comes and I go through the steps, how would I know if it will be the main page pic or just added to others that might be there?? Thanks. Mike Drums (talk) 02:09, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Drums: What en-wiki does with the photo (including how you yourself may edit en-wiki) really isn't Commons' affair. If there is doubt about how best to use it, take it up on the talk page of the article. - Jmabel ! talk 03:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. Thanks. Mike Drums (talk) 23:28, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Self-made images?

[edit]

Hello. What are the copyright rules surrounding self-made images, specifically flags. I have recently uploaded 200 or so flags of political parties in Pakistan to Commons, and then proceeded to use them to update lower quality version in their respective party articles/pages. A fellow editor reverted them under the pretense they infringe on copyright. Is this a copyright issue? I designed all flags myself in an editing software, for the purpose of updating some older images or adding them to articles where they weren't present. AgentDuck11 (talk) 01:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AgentDuck11: Hi, and welcome. Please identify the source images and their copyright holders per COM:EVID and review COM:DW and COM:PAKISTAN.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:04, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK so I've indicated the source sites for where the flags were derived, and labelled them under
Public domain This image of a flag is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain, because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship. For more information, see Commons:Threshold of originality § Logos and flags.

. do any copyright issues remain? AgentDuck11 (talk) 22:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AgentDuck11: I'm a bit confused. You say you "designed" the flags yourself. Are these your renderings of flags actually used, or are you saying that you invented flags for the parties? - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The flags are all re-renders of poorer quality party flags, based off of the parties' own, as high quality or professional versions weren't available. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:06, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, most of these look too simple to be copyrighted (see COM:TOO), though it is likely if the designs are in actual use by the parties they should be marked with {{Trademarked}} and if they are not in use by the actual parties then they are probably out of scope. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many parties are defunct/not active, some are unofficial, and the majority had not uploaded any clear quality versions of their flags. I chose to create standardized versions for almost all. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:10, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Based off of what few designs they seemed to be using. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:11, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to also mention that quite a few of the flags are inspired by the parties' logo or symbol designs where a proper flag was absent, so some have been created from scratch. These flags still stay true to the parties' symbols/logos and are representative of what their flags would be. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:18, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AgentDuck11: For those where there was no "proper party flag", at the very least you should mark the file as your own creation of a hypothetical or imaginary flag. Those may be out of scope, I haven't kept up with the current thinking on this and I know it has been a controversial area. The ones that are just your renderings of historical or present-day flags should be fine, at least for the most part. Most of these should be {{PD-flag}}. I'm a little concerned that a few may be too complex for that, e.g. the following:
Jmabel ! talk 21:17, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone through the uploads, termed them with PD-flag and provided source URLs for the images they're based on. Is there anything else I need to worry about concerning copyright?
If everything's good, please let me know if these are fine to use in pages/articles. AgentDuck11 (talk) 01:14, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AgentDuck11: what you've done looks generally reasonable, but I cannot promise there are no problems. I'm not going to review hundreds of uploads, research their accuracy/history and give my opinion on each. The burden is on the uploader to do that sort of diligence. As I said, the two most likely issues are that some of these might be over Pakistan's threshold of originality, in which case we can't do anything about an existing copyright by the party or by the designer of the flag, and any that are conjecture on your part should be identified as such. - Jmabel ! talk 05:10, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I uploaded this file around one year ago, and noticed that suddenly it's not viewing properly. When I try to open the SVG file, it views normally; but when I try to view the PNG version, it doesn't open, and the following error appears:

[edit]

I have uploaded an article concerning the relativity theory, on which I got an answer - fully red - that accused me of a lot of dirty deeds, without mentioning any of them in particular. Could you be more specific? I suppose you conclude that I wish to suggest nasty practices by Einstein which is not difficult and which I therefore carefully avoided (also now, by the way). The only thing I wish is to bring the subject of possible errors in the Theory in discussion without pointing. I agree it is difficult to avoid, but I might be able to phrase things in such a way that it becomes easier to swallow. The main point: IF THERE ARE ERRORS IN THE RELATIVITY THEORY AND CRIRICISM IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, THEN THE THEORY MIGHT DO SERIOUS HARM TO OUR SOCIETY. I am prepared to try and get to handling this matter together - realising that even if we make this a public matter the chances of changing anything are slim. Uploading 151 of my own images at a time?

[edit]

So I'm just wondering what the best way to upload 151 images would be. I would be uploading Sankey diagrams for all 151 seats of the Australian House of Representatives. This seems to me to be kind of in the middle between a regular upload and a batch upload, and the tools I've seen seem to be geared towards institutions instead of regular users. I am leaning towards OpenRefine, but do I have to put in a batch upload request or create a bot account for 151 of my own files? Also, presumably I'd be repeating this process one time per election (every 3-4 years). Thanks. MarkiPoli (talk) 12:14, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I want to upload original work (PDF) as a new use, but abuse filter 281 prevents it

[edit]

I am a new user, trying to upload my own work as PDF. The work are two figures showing the two types of diversity used in the direct imaging of exoplanets, related to Angular-Spectral Differential Imaging observation strategy. Both images are my original work, and in my opinion, high quality figures explaining the observation strategy in Angular-Spectral Differential Imaging more clearly than other published work.

The images are like this [3].

I would like to contribute these to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methods_of_detecting_exoplanets#Data_Reduction_Techniques section and put the figures into the public domain. I would like to upload them as .pdf since they are generated with latex/tikz and so .pdf is their native format. From what I understand the upload filter blocked me because I am a new user and there is concern about uploading copyrighted material.

I would still like to contribute the two figures to the wikimedia commons and, if possible, the specific page or a new page on direct imaging of exoplanets if more appropriate. Evergreen3026 (talk) 11:10, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What do I do? Other songs have single covers and they're copyrighted DipsetBurnerAccount (talk) 00:39, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can probably get away with uploading it to Wikipedia as fair use. It can't be uploaded to Commons since its a modern album. Don't be supprised if it and the article get deleted on Wikipedia though. Singles albums are hardly ever notable enough to warrant an article. To the point that I probably wouldn't even bother. --Adamant1 (talk) 00:54, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying. I finished writing the article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipset_Anthem, and the song is notable enough in my opinion to warrant an article. How do I upload an image directly to Wikipedia? All of the things I've seen so far take me to Commons. DipsetBurnerAccount (talk) 02:13, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. On Wikipedia if you click the "upload" link on the side bar and then scroll down to "Upload a non-free file" then it should upload the file there instead of Commons. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:36, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Images for Wikidata and hopefully later Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello~ I previously added a photo to Wikicommons, but was too slow to use it in a Wiki page, so it was deleted. I have some photos which I can add to Wikidata pages, but they have yet to have a Wikipedia page. Would they still be deleted? Rickinasia (talk) 09:47, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rickinasia: Hi, and welcome. You uploaded many files, please read your user talk page more thoroughly.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:34, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: Hello~ I have read my user talk page and those are unrelated. Perhaps I am thinking of an image I uploaded to Wikipedia and it was deleted as it wasn't used. Regardless, my question still stands; if I upload images to Wikicommons and they are, for months at a time, only used within Wikidata, with the goal that they will be used in Wikipedia pages once people create those pages, is that acceptable? Or will images that are only used within Wikidata going to be deleted as they are not currently beng used in a Wikipedia page? Cheers! Rickinasia (talk) 02:30, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rickinasia: I think there is at least one false premise to your question, and it is very hard to discuss a hypothetical file that no one here has seen.
Probably about 90% of images on Commons are not used in any other WMF wiki, and that is fine. No image should have been deleted from Commons simply because it was not used in any en-wiki article. Assuming there is no copyright/licensing problem, inclusion in a Wikipedia article is a sufficient, but by no means necessary, condition to keep an image on Commons.
If, however, you uploaded the image to en-wiki itself: yes, not being used in an article would probably be sufficient reason to delete an image from en-wiki. Wikipedia is a collection of articles; Commons is a media repository. Commons deletes would-be articles on sight; en-wiki is pretty quick to delete unused media. - Jmabel ! talk 04:00, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ohhhh! This is exciting to hear! I ask as I have taken a lot of pictures of scientists over the past few years who have Wikidata pages but no Wikipedia pages (in any language). I'll slowly go through the media I have and upload to Wikicommons and use in Wikidata accordingly. Thank you! Rickinasia (talk) 06:33, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rickinasia: Which photo did your initial post mean, then?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:29, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter. I was not asking for insight on the old issue that happened years ago. Summary: At some point in time, I uploaded a photo to some Wiki site (appears it wasn't Wikicommons so I now presume Wikipedia), didn't get used, it was deleted. Having had that experience with Wiki-something, I wanted to see if I would have a similiar issue with "upload to Wikicommons, use in Wikidata". <- this was my question. [edit]

Slav! I want to upload a new version of this file, but I'm not allowed, what should I do? should I be entitled to this type of uploading files? Zamand Karim (talk) 11:51, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Zamand Karim: Please look at your filter log. When you tried to overwrite the file, you should have received a message directing you to the page Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests, which indicates how to request the possibilty to overwrite a file. However, the file Zirak.jpg is poorly documented, it has no author identification, no date, no indication of a source of origin other than an immediate flickr source, no history of publication, it has only an empty PD-Art template without parameters and it does not have a justification for why the image would be in the public domain. In that situation, it is not clear if it can be kept on Commons. That can be taken in consideration before investing too much work on that file. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:40, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of prominent person used by permission of his estate

[edit]

I'm working with the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society trying to get a page created for Earl Bailly, 1903-1977. The society were granted stewardship of his estate by the remaining family members Suzanne Bailly and Ron Bailly. They have a large collection of photographs and paintings that they own the rights to, although they've been shared publicly for many years. How do we obtain official permission to add these images? Artstoronto (talk) 15:56, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

E. Earl Bailly
@Artstoronto Hello! I see you have uploaded a couple. It's quite possible the society has authorized you to do this, but the source clearly states "Copyright ©2024 The Lunenburg Art Gallery Society. All rights reserved. Please do not reproduce any image without permission from the artist."
These photos may be deleted from Commons sooner or later, unless you can show you have the right to "give them away." I recommend you use the tool at COM:VRT/CONSENT to do so, it will help you do so by non-public mail contact. Another way is that www.lunenburgartgallery.com creates a page on the website with the pictures you want to "donate", and state on it that the pics are released under the acceptable license of your choice (like the one you used on your uploads, or something else from Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses). Then that page can be given as "Source".
Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:45, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I assume you mean you'd like to create a Wikipedia article about him. This is a GREAT idea, and I'm interested in helping you do it. If you want, come and talk about it at my WP-talkpage: User talk:Gråbergs Gråa Sång. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:07, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would very much like to! I am a director of the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society so I guess I gave myself permission. I also wrote the © at the bottom, but that's meant to apply to our member's artwork located elsewhere on the site. We have the ownership of 100+ photos, on the condition from his family that we use them to promote Earl's legacy.
Every few months I look again at trying to create a page and get so overwhelmed. We have tried to hire editors but it's become impossible to distinguish between real help and scammers so I've given up trying. If you have any advice I'd love to hear it! Artstoronto (talk) 20:53, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Artstoronto It is certainly simplest if you can indicate the licensing status on the source page. (Similarly for any other already-published photos you wish to upload.) Otherwise, you'd really need to go through the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 22:38, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong country, but it could be PD-Canada if it was published before 1974 by the NS government. Same thing for the 1953 photo at the same source. Personally, I think that in general the photos by an information service of a government can be assumed to have been made to be published and to have been published soon after creation, but other users may prefer explicit evidence of publication. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

--KEmel49 (talk) 16:40, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Getting permission from the person implys that you have contact with the person and can ask the person to provide the pictures in another way (the person could upload the pictures themselves, or mail them to VRT or to you). But it is no problem to take the pictures from faceboot IF there is prove that the VRT permission is for the pictures on facebook. --KEmel49 (talk) 18:06, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The person owning the rights needs to send a mail to VRT. You will find a template for the permission mail at VRT. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:15, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@KEmel49: It is certainly simplest if it is a public-facing Facebook post from the copyright-holder, and the permission there is clear as to what license is granted. If so, that's sufficient. Assuming the picture itself is on the same Facebook thread, when you upload just cite that thread as the source, and quote the permission granted there in the "permission" section of {{Information}}. No need to involve VRT.
If the Facebook post is not public, though, then we'll need VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 22:44, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
please get me understand in which way should i put that comment section here.
--KEmel49 (talk) 02:50, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@KEmel49: You can't "put that comment section here". If it is a public post, link the URL of the post (and someone can follow the link and read the comments section). As I said above, quote the permission (but not the whole comments section!) in the "permission" section of {{Information}} for the file. - Jmabel ! talk 04:03, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
VRT should not be needed here if it is a public-facing post and the comment with permission is clear. - Jmabel ! talk 04:06, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploading

[edit]

Hi, We want to add a new image to a Wikipedia page of our organization's CEO/founder. We uploaded a copyright free image that we own to Wikipedia Commons that was speedily deleted due to "‪Wikimedia Commons is not your free personal web host". Could anyone offer advice on the process for doing this and how to avoid our images being removed? Thanks in advance. J0109B (talk) 22:18, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@J0109B: You don't say what organization, and it looks like this account has no prior uploads (deleted or otherwise). It would be much simpler if the person who uploaded the image would log in on the same account they used to upload to ask this and/or if you would give the filename of the file that was speedily deleted.
If the description clearly stated whose photo it was, and if either the description contained a link to the relevant Wikipedia article or the article was already using the photo, and if things are as you describe them, that should probably not have resulted in deletion, speedy or otherwise, but with no indication of the article, the photo, or the uploader, there is not a lot more I can say.
Just an aside: the following is not a Commons matter, but if someone involved is editing the English-language Wikipedia on a paid basis or as part of their job, make sure they are familiar with en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure and act accordingly, or they are very likely to have their account blocked on that site. - Jmabel ! talk 22:52, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is Commons, the media repository of Wikipedia, not Wikipedia. If you want to contribute with images or videos, you can start uploading right now. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 09:58, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cybertek1: assuming you mean the English-language Wikipedia, you'd probably do best to ask at en:Wikipedia:Teahouse.
@C.Suthorn: "media repository of Wikipedia" is really a bit misleading (although "media repository associated with Wikipedia" fair enough). The various Wikipedias (one in each language) and Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, are all sister projects considered to be at the same level. Commons is no more "the media repository of Wikipedia" than en-wiki is "the English-language encyclopedia of Commons." - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Media Repository of WMF or of WM. But apart from contributers to the projects nobody does understand that. The OP in this thread obviously has little knowledge of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Not every Papiertaschentuch is a Tempo, but still all Papiertaschentücher are called Tempo. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 10:36, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@C.Suthorn: agreed, but plenty of people read this page besides the person who asked the question, so it's important to be as accurate as we can be. - Jmabel ! talk 19:18, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Фотографії картин

[edit]

Bayayaku (talk) 15:26, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bayayaku: What is the copyright status of the pictures in question? If the artist died less than 70 years ago, then the work is almost certainly still in copyright and you would need a license from the heir to the artist's intellectual property rights. - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the artists are deceased while others are still alive. Do I need an official, legalized document from the artist or their legal successor, or would an email confirmation be sufficient? What about the owners of the paintings? Do I need any approval from them? Bayayaku (talk) 07:29, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You'd need one of two things (either should suffice):
  1. The license is clearly stated on a page clearly under control of the artist or their heir (e.g. the artist's own website; a public-facing post on the artist's social media; etc.). If we have that, then anyone can upload citing that as a source.
  2. Email sent by the artist or heir to VRT granting a specific, Commons-compatible free license. The process is described in some detail at COM:VRT. Вікісховище:Волонтерська служба зв'язку appears to be only very partially translated, but may be some help for what they need to write. If someone reads Russian better than they read English, Commons:Волонтёрская команда содействия appears to be fully translated.

Screenshots

[edit]

I know that screenshots are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons however, I have seen a few images screenshotted from YouTube. I am just wondering if it is or if it is not allowed since I do not quite understand it and yes, I have looked at the rules. WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 22:16, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Screenshots are allowed if the video is freely licensed or if the work is old enough to be in the public domain (pre-1929 US films, some Soviet films, European films in which all principal creators have been dead for 70 years, etc.) Abzeronow (talk) 22:37, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, are most or none of YouTube videos freely licensed? I know I can check but I am just being lazy. WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 22:41, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Most are not. For YouTube, video needs to be marked as being Creative Commons-Attribution. If it doesn't have that, then it cannot be used here. (as noted above, known public domain films are an exception) Abzeronow (talk) 22:44, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks. I will make sure to check. WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 22:48, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I found this that was allowed as long as credit was given, is this good or do I need to remove it?File:Trey Wolff August 8, 2023.jpg WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 23:45, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
License reviewed it, video is freely licensed by the copyright holder (the Tennessee Titans). Abzeronow (talk) 00:10, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, sounds good, sorry to bother again. WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 00:21, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is the help desk, asking relevant questions is not a bother to me, and I'm willing to help answer them. Abzeronow (talk) 17:19, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

file size = 0 (when it's not)

[edit]

Yesterday I uploaded a file (Birger Jarl till Bjälbo.pdf) with the intention to work on it in Swedish Wikisource. But it (Sw WS) refuses to recognize it, claiming it is "0 x 0 bytes", even though Commons shows it as non-zero. I waited a while (overnight) to see if the problem would go away, but ... no. Then I thought I'd just upload it again, but ... now of course it's a duplicate, so that doesn't work either. I'm at a loss for how to proceed. Is it possible for YOU to just simply delete/obliterate the existing version, eg, so I can start over from scratch?? Bio2935c (talk) 23:16, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bio2935c: Please have a look at s:sv:File:Birger Jarl till Bjälbo.pdf to know if you see it now. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:30, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Many thanks!! (and just out of curiousity, if you have time: what did you do, and what do you suppose had gone wrong?) Bio2935c (talk) 01:52, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried this on the sv.wikisource page. It does not always work, but it worked this time. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:19, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@SeekerAlamahgem: Not sure what you mean here by "published"; they can all be found at Special:ListFiles/SeekerAlamahgem. Is there somewhere you expect to see them and don't? - Jmabel ! talk 19:28, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User page missing/not missing?

[edit]

I clicked on a link for my user page, and got "This page does not exist."  I'm fairly certain that I've visited the page before and it did have content.  I'm logged in, so my account has not been deleted.  If I select the "contributions" link in the upper right corner, it is also empty.  But if I go to a page I know I've edited, my edits are listed in the history;  And if I click on 伟思礼 there, I do see my actual user page.  Is it a bug in how non-ASCII is being handled? 伟思礼 (talk) 16:09, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And the first time I clicked "add topic" on this, it said "no longer logged in" 伟思礼 (talk) 16:09, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Correct: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:伟思礼
Doesn't exist? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/伟思礼 伟思礼 (talk) 18:49, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@伟思礼, this is Wikimedia Commons. Each project hosted by WMF has a separate namespace, including your User and User talk pages. Therefore, they are independent pages that can be different, or you may copy one to the other, if you desire them to match. You could also create a "master page" at Metawiki; that master page will be reflected on all other projects unless a local page supersedes it. For example, I've created such a page: meta:User:Elizium23. Therefore you can achieve consistency, without needing to keep dozens/hundreds of pages in sync.
That being said, it's true your user page doesn't exist yet on Commons. However, you've edited many different wikis so far, in your tenure of 7 years. Your user page does exist on enwiki, as well as Wiktionary. Take a look. Enjoy. Elizium23 (talk) 19:26, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

how do i upload a rock band and its history

[edit]

I want to upload a rockband and its history Geoffrey Frank Horgan (talk) 17:46, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is Wikimedia Commons, which is a media repository. Wikipedia is more suited to articles about notable bands, and their history. Abzeronow (talk) 17:50, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sputnik

Removal of Wikidata insert

[edit]

I remember having to add a Wikidata page to the image before it uploaded. Was this removed? Roastedbeanz1 (talk) 07:00, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Roastedbeanz1: I'm confused about what you mean. Wikidata pages are generally documentation. Do you mean a Wikidata item? And even then, I don't know what you would mean by adding it to an image. Using it as a "depicts" property in the SDC, or something else? Is this about the Upload Wizard or some other upload tool? - Jmabel ! talk 17:37, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on type of video to upload & text in video

[edit]

Hi,

I have video of bird behavior that I'd like to upload. The behavior is probably seen better when played at 25% normal speed (partly because the video is shaky, albeit stabilized and partly because normal speed is just too fast to see what's happening).

Would it be more appropriate to:

  • upload only the 25% speed video
  • upload only the normal speed video
  • upload a single video with both 25% and then normal speed

Also, I try not to embed text into my video clips, but I'm wondering if it's frowned upon to embed text in the video indicating "25% normal speed".

Not sure if there's a "style guide" for video uploads.

Thanks for any suggestions Pdanese (talk) 13:58, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pdanese: If the 25% is best, certainly upload that. Your call on whether the other is worth uploading. (I probably would.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:39, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That would be an issue to resolve on Spanish Wikipedia. Discuss it on https://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discusi%C3%B3n:Hazbin_Hotel Graeme Bartlett (talk) 23:31, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Graeme Bartlett, I'm curious how you decided to direct this Italian-speaking editor to the Spanish-language talk page which does not exist, when this brand-new editor has no edits outside two on Commons, and CentralAuth indicates a nascent account on itwiki, but not eswiki? Elizium23 (talk) 00:23, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Spanish Wikipedia has cosplay images for this article. I am not that great at recognising the language though. Italian Wikipedia article has no cosplay image. A talk page can be created if there is something to say.Graeme Bartlett (talk) 01:07, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Subtitle tool?

[edit]

Hei hei! Manually assigning initial subtitles is painfully tedious. 😥 Translating them is fine, as the times are already established. Are there any useful tools or ways that will make adding subtitles easier and/or faster? I couldn't really see anything of the sort on the subtitle information page, though maybe I simply didn't look closely enough! EdoAug (talk) 01:41, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
