Revenue Cutter Thetis on Cruise of Islands Between Hawaii and Midway

HONOLULU, Jan. 24.—The United Stat, revenue cutter Thetis, recently stationed in these waters, is mi a cruise to .Midway and islands between here and Midway, and as a part "! her business she is investigating the reports of extensive poaching operations by Japanese, who. are said ,to have destroyed millions of birds for the sake of tin- plumage. On Bird island, Neckar island, Gardiner, French Frigate shoals, Laysand and Llsianski islands are swarms of Xli in birds and other fliers, ami all the islands were Included In a "Hawaiian islands bird reservation" by the federal government some months ago. .Since' then there have been reports of continued poaching, and it is suspected that some or the poachers are Japanese who have headquarters here. Within about a year nearly all of the Japanese fishing sampans have been fitted with power engines.
