FATHER PREACHES FROM SON'S PULPIT

Hughes of Grinnell, lowa, a member' Of the Methodist conference in lowan and for over half a century an active minister in the Methodist church, tilled the pulpit of the First Methodist church this mornig. being Introduced by his son, the Rev. Dr. Matt S. Hughes, the pastor, whose brother, Rev. Dr. Edwin H. Hug D D., is the .Methodist bishop at San Francis, ... Dr. Hughes was greet,',! by an audience that filled the church to overflowing. "It has been my pleasure to introduce to you many distinguished men of this and other denominations," said Dr. Matt S. Hughes to his congregation, ."but 1 take a peculiar pleasure today in introducing my father, who lias for fifty-five years been a minister of the gospel. You have never heard j him before, yet, In a nobler sense. you have heard him ever since I have been pastor of this church." Taking as his subject the preeminence of Christ, Dr. Hughes preached a sermon which was remark-able-for grace and beauty of diction. Tall, with snow-white hair and of commanding appearance, Dr. Hughes, In the delivery of his sermon, made a deep impression. lie- declared that America and England possess the highest civilization the world lias ever known because these two countries have most readily received Christ's teachings. Christ is pre-eminent in his pre-existence, he said, having existed before the saints. He is the only perfect character and is unique in his absolute superiority, knowing no sin. He gave the greatest example ever known of self-sacrifice, nnd ls to be loved above all relatives .or friends. Dr. Hughes ha- been on the., coast since November, having been with his son. the bishop, at San Francisco until three weeks ago.
