Mike Hurst
Mike Hurst is the chairman of the Republican Party of Mississippi. Party leadership elected him to the position in May 2024.[1]
He was a Republican candidate for Attorney General of Mississippi in the 2015 elections.[2] He was running to unseat three-term Democratic incumbent Jim Hood.[3] Hurst filed his candidacy paperwork with the Republican Party of Mississippi on February 27, 2015.[4] For more on Hurst's 2015 attorney general campaign, click here to jump down the page.
Hurst is a lawyer and former federal prosecutor. He is known for his work targeting corrupt public officials as an assistant U.S. attorney in the southern district of Mississippi from 2006–2015.[5]
Biography
Hurst is a Newton County native and graduate of George Washington University Law School. He attended East Central Community College and Millsaps College for his undergraduate degree.[5]
Hurst worked for nearly a decade in the criminal division of the U.S. attorney's office. According to his campaign website, Hurst's tenure as an assistant U.S. attorney was marked by his successful prosecution of high-profile cases pertaining to public corruption, illegal immigration, and consumer protection. He resigned the position in February 2015 in order to focus on his campaign for state attorney general.[5]
Hurst's prior political experience includes serving under former Congressman Chip Pickering (R) and as counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. While a member of Pickering's staff, Hurst worked on federal contract reforms and on both the Stafford Act and HOME Act, which facilitated relief and recovery efforts for Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.[5]
He also practiced law at Troutman Sanders LLP in Washington from 2000–2003.[4]

2015
Eleven state executive offices in Mississippi were up for election in 2015. The general election was held on November 3, 2015, following a primary election on August 4, 2015. Runoffs were scheduled for August 25 in case no candidate received a majority (50 percent plus one) of the popular vote in a given primary race.
Hurst ran unopposed in Republican the primary election and faced incumbent Jim Hood (D) in the general election.[6]
