Michael Toomin was a judge of the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois. He assumed office in 2010. He left office on December 31, 2022.

Toomin ran for re-election for judge of the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois. He won in the retention election on November 3, 2020.

Toomin passed away June 23, 2023 after a battle with cancer.[1]

Education

Toomin attended Northwestern University and graduated with a B.A. in 1962. He went on to receive his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law in 1967.[2]

Military service

Toomin served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958.[2]

Career

Toomin began his legal career in 1967 as an assistant public defender in Cook County. He was a solo practitioner from 1969 to 1980, specializing in criminal defense. He was first appointed to the bench in 1980 as an associate judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Four years later, he became a circuit court judge and was assigned to the Criminal Division. He became the supervising judge of this division in 1994 and held this position until his appointment to the appellate court. From 2008 to 2010, he served as a judge on the First District Appellate Court.[2]

Toomin was retained to the Cook Judicial Circuit Court with 74.7 percent of the vote on November 4, 2014. [3] 

Evaluations

The Illinois State Bar Association rated Michael Toomin as Recommended for retention in 2014.[4]
