Jorge Vera is a former member of the Laredo, Texas City Council, representing District 7 from 2012 to November 12, 2014. Laredo voters recalled Vera from office on November 4, 2014. Following the verification of the results of the recall election by the Laredo City Council on November 12, 2014, Vera was removed from office.[1][2]

Cocaine possession

Vera was arrested on August 1, 2014, for possession of cocaine. He was indicted and formally charged for possession and filing a false report to a police officer on August 20, 2014.[3]

On February 13, 2015, Vera pleaded guilty to both charges. He received a sentence of three years of probation and a $2,500 fine.[4]

Shortly after Vera's arrest in August, a Laredo attorney named George Altgelt spearheaded a recall effort to remove Vera from office. In reference to Vera and his arrest, Altgelt said, "He needs to be made an example out of. We hold our public officials to a higher standard. Or at least we should." The recall effort proved successful. Vera was recalled from office in November 2014.[5][2]

According to the Laredo Sun, Vera is the first member of the Laredo City Council to be recalled from office by petition in the council's history.[6]
