Excellent plot and animation, matched by very few of the early efforts to combine 2D animation and CGI (and certainly many poor attempt that came later). recommended by scottryder on 2015-12-25 22:50 classic anime, has excellent cgs for the time, and excellent 2d animations even for todays standard for fans by sabraen on 2012-12-13 21:44 Short, but impressive show evoking a feeling of an experimental creation. The animation is a mixture of 2D and 3D graphics of high quality considering the year it was aired although changes between them aren't smooth enough. The year of airing is also notable in characteristic symbols the plot bears - ecologic issues, problems of humankind's 'imaginary' superiority (also elaborated in e.g. Animatrix), human's nature, nearing world destruction etc. Presented characters are not plain, but their development is not too subtle as well. Unfortunately, the ending itself is quite a cliche that does not exactly suit one's expectations as well as the plot itself. The overall impression is an enjoyable watch that is reasonably long (no, you won't lost a lot of your precious time) and its main theme is an evergreen. Try it out. recommended by bogy4321 on 2011-06-28 15:37 I do not know why the low rating...but I watched it 6 times now and it always takes my breath...the animation and the plot are very good, maybe a little bit too short, but is worth to watch it. Reviews show all add review show review by ThatAnimeSnob on 2008-08-26 19:48 Rating: 4.5 Approval: - STORY SECTION Post-apocalyptic world, animal-like mutants, a submarine out to save what’s left of humanity by an insane scientist, and some more typical elements, packed in only 2 hours. The main theme of the story is hardly original. The pace of the story is almost predictable. The conclusion is on the other hand promising but fails to wrap the story smoothly or even to make sense. You almost feel like the scriptwriters were not given enough time and ended the story in a rush, unfulfilling way. The scenario clearly needed more episodes and development in order to run smoothly and to make sense. As it is, it feels like a lot of fuss happened for no reason and the conclusion will leave you more frustrated rather than satisfied. It had potential for greatness, thanks to all the talking about humanity’s greed and ecology. It didn’t make use of it though and thus the story is half good. A typical GONZO mistake. Very good visuals and promising stories that are always ruined by their apathy at keeping the pace of a series as good as it begins. CHARACTER SECTION - As it is, the only character with interest is the “evil” scientist, who wants to wipe out humanity. He has a good reason for what he is doing and is not a typical bad to the bone villain. - The only thing the rest of the characters do is fighting for or against him, instead of having personality and goals of their own. There is supposed to be some personal drama around the leading man and woman but given the short duration of the series, it will feel uninteresting. All the whining and crying of the shark-like leader and the renegade female mutant feel more like pointless torture time, rather than reason for acting as they do. None of the characters has much coloring or development because of the duration. Most seem to have something interesting to show but nothing of such is shown in the end. As soon as their development begins, we see the ending credits. - Even the scientist is not that great, as his plan is not given enough time to be explained. I mean, destroying humanity and most of the world just to replace sentient life with a race of warlike animals? How will that help the planet? Duh! ART SECTION - This is amongst the first anime that managed to mix 2D and 3D without making it look utterly stupid. There is a huge amount of details and colors given to almost everything, making the optical department a sight of sore eyes. - Realism in motion is quite good, although casual viewers will probably dislike the way 3D objects move and the mannerism of the characters. They both look weird and not natural, something that was expected for an early CGI work. But it’s not like GONZO learned from its mistakes and improved later on. - Anyway, the animation takes some time to get used to but it eventually becomes bearable. The 3D doesn’t always look ok next to the 2D but if we think this is GONZO we are talking about, we must give them a credit for taking animation in anime to a whole new level with this title. Really; just check how lame all previous attempts were. Hell, just check how uninteresting most upcoming 3D anime were. - Other than that, the character designs were way too generic and simplistic to the point you cared more about the backgrounds and the action than about them. This tends to make them less interesting than the theme of the story. SOUND SECTION - Jazz for humans and tribal ouga bouga drum music for mutants, almost made it sound like a strategy game with themed factions. Voice acting was decent, although the voice synk for the mutants feels more like dubbing than actually listening to what they say with groans and barks in their native language. Beyond all that, the context in the dialogues is mostly philosophical and scientific and you get a kick out of paying attention to what they say. ENJOYMENT SECTION The aesthetics are better than the story and the characters put together. It all comes down to a silly ecology theme of value your planet and recycle or the shark boogiemen will eat you. The Blue Submarine is sinking in term of enjoyment and you won’t remember it for something particular. show review by schiaccia on 2006-08-21 12:48 Rating: 6.16 Approval: 85.2% (2 votes) Blue Submarine No. 6 seems to me like a concept that had a great deal of potential but was stymied by a little too much philosophical rambling, and being only around 2 hours long. There's a lot of great design and ideas, but it's like all of that has been crammed into 4 episodes instead of 26. The animation is really great, as the production values are just that bit better because it is an OVA not a full length series, and it shows. The design and style is very pretty and you can see the seeds of Last Exile in this work that Gonzo would go on to utilise in that classic series. The cell and CG animation is very similar to Last Exile with the character and mecha design. The sound is odd, as the music is very forgettable and seems at odds with the rest of the production. Bop Jazz breaks out during the action scenes that seems very misplaced with the dark and mysterious themes of the show. The voice acting is fine, except from the effects used on the shark character in the english dub - I needed to turn on the subtitles to understand. Again as the show is only about 2 hours long, the story is undeveloped and rushed. The pacing is very awkward and for the first episode you really don't have a clue of what's going on. The story is placed in the future where a scientist, Zorndyke, has created a race of animal-human hybrids and has melted the polar ice caps to cover the planet with water, making it an ideal home for these animals and wiping out humanity. We follow the team from Blue Submarine No. 6 and ex pilot Hayami as they try to save the world. What I don't understand is that Zorndyke's supposed to be making these noble creatures, but they're bloodthirsty crazed buffoons. Also why is he making a waterworld when not all of his creations are fish based? As you can see it's a bit convoluted and would have been served well by a longer script and more development. On the philosophy front, personally I'm getting tired of all this "Humanity is bad, let's go back to Nature"...crap. we are nature. deal with it. The character design is where this show shines however, as all the characters are interesting and unique, but with just 4 episodes you don't get to know that much about them, even the leads. There's all these little characters that I wanted to know more about, like the little girl on the submarine- is she phsychic or just good with sonar? The leader of the Blue mission - what's his story? how did he get such a big head? Just not enough development there. There are bad characters as well - the animal hybrid things - they just seem so comical and stupid. Value wise there's not a lot there, it's a decently made anime but it just doesn't make it work. A second watch might be warranted to better understand it, but not for improved enjoyment. So overall in the enjoyment stakes, it's a little low. You end up with a feeling like you wanted more, like something was missing. It reminds me of how I felt after watching titles like Spriggan, Rahxephon or Steamboy - where a lot of the ingredients for success are there, but the show just doesn't get them going. show review by 4v4l0n42 on 2005-09-25 16:31 Rating: 7.5 Approval: 90.7% (4 votes) Attention, there may be spoilers. Animation [8] /10 The style and the realization is audacious. Before this 1998 GONZO story there were very few studios who actually got into the 3d GCI at this level. They tried, at least I can give them that. Blue Submarine n.6 is what I call an experiment. In fact, many things inside it resemble what will be the masterpiece Last Exile, both the character (especially the female) and the animation. The 3D is not a good technical achievement, but surely is a good start. The CGI does not fuse homogeneously with the drawings, and the designer noticed it. But then the director said it was OK, as people would get used to it. In fact, after a while you DO get used to it, if you are not too picky, but the very fact that there are only 6 OVA makes the attempt utterly futile, because the animation becomes familiar when the anime is about to finish.... I do have to thank them in any case, because it is thanks to this anime that we have been blessed with Last Exile. Sound [7] /10 The jazz songs during the naval combats are quite a catch, I would say they resemble something of Cowboy Bebop, even though they're not as appropriate as the Sunrise Inc. production's. The overall sound is not remarkable, though, it lacks of a theme that can be remembered through the episodes. A part from the fighting scenes there is no evident music that adapts to the story, hence in the end it becomes monotone. And also let us not forget that there is no melodic/sentimental song that matches the final scenes of the series, something like Arcadia by Yoko Kanno. Well, this is not Escaflowne (sound [10] /10). Story [7] /10 This story is something already seen a million times, the Earth has been gradually destroyed by the human exploitation of the natural resources, therefore the planet is now "rebelling" against the human species. Though there are some differences, the plot is very similar to others (Escaflowne, Last Exile, Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, just to name a few), here the one who takes the responsibility to destroy humans for their sins is a scientist that was working along with those who exploited the planet in the first place. In this case it makes much more sense, and the whole reason for the war seems to be somehow justified. There are also some bad points about the story. The most interesting parts are the inner psychology of Zorndyke and the relationship between Tetsu Hayami and the pseudo mermaid.. What did they do? They relegated these two topics into micro-moments, that apparently are a marginal part of the story. The director wanted to concentrate on the battle and the animation, because while looking at the special I discovered that he was almost obsessed with making something new. The mix is not bad as a result, but if he had made a 13 episodes series with more in-depth storyline it would have had a much bigger effect, that is the reason I personally think the series was not a success. Character [8] /10 As I described above, the only characters that needed attention were Zorndyke, the red-eyes mermaid and Hayani, with the exception of the giant experimental wale who saves them. I was really moved by the first scenes when the two (Hayani and the mermaid) met, where he saves her by bringing her back to the water. The use of lights and music was excellent, and I thought that it could have been the beginning of an evolution in terms of profundity of the characters. Unfortunately a was wrong, as the moments of poetical description of the protagonist's psychology and sentiments are very sporadic. The mermaid looks strangly familiar... someone said Chobits? I'm sorry I did not hear you. Value [7] /10 I find some problems in valuing the re-view ability of this anime. At first I would say that it's a straight 3 and let me explain the reason. As I mentioned before, there ARE interesting aspects, but they are not portrayed exhaustively in the series. Therefore you get that bad feeling that you're missing something, and you need to compensate the emptiness derived from the missing story with something else meaningful. That, on the other hand, could be considered a good point, as it will give you the will to, for example, write a review, or a story. Balancing it becomes a 7. Enjoyment [8] /10 I have to admit that I somehow enjoyed the series even though its bad points that I previously mentioned. To be completely honest, I have this feeling of emptiness that needs to be filled with something that the anime did not achieve in giving me. There were too many good points to analyse, but I would say that it was worth watching in the end. Federico Pistono show review by techniko on 2005-07-02 21:30 Rating: 6.33 Approval: 25.5% (6 votes) This anime didn't feel like an anime. It was more like a serious movie of the little mermaid mixed with jurrasic park. Animation [8] /10 The animation in Blue Submarine no.6 is quite good. The mix of CGI, drawing and (painting?) isn't too hard to get used to. I didn't like the CGI water at the begginning but I quickly grew fond of it as it adds alot of realism to most naval scenes. There are some character designs that looked a bit odd, some of Kino's outfits especially caught my attention as being "not quite right". I could give animation 9/10 but I think a 8 is more appropriate. Sound [7] /10 The only music I noticed were a couple of BigBand jazz tracks during submarine combats, and I thought it fit ok. Maybe a little bit annoying, giving an "old" feel to the series. The voice actors do a good job. Nothing exceptional in the sound design area for this anime. Story [6] /10 I don't have much to say here. Alot of the anime is just naval combat and action scenes. There is some depth to the story but it didn't print on me. There is alot of useless submarine chatter that really doesn't deserve any attention. Did I actually crave to know what would happen next? Not at all. It's a decent ride though, but not something I'd recommend. Characters [7] /10 The characters are very believable and feel real. On the other hand there is hardly any developpement to their personalities at all, but that doesn't matter too much since it's only a 4 episode OVA. I liked 2 of the characters almost enough to feel something for them. Value: [5] /10 I wouldn't show Blue Submarine to anyone I know. But if you're desperately looking for anime it's actually a decent watch. If you get bored, it's not too long, if you like the action scenes, then even better for you. Enjoyment: [5] /10 I didn't feel anything but I liked some of the visuals and a couple of characters were pleasant. It was very average in my book, but I didn't feel like I was wasting my time by watching it. I most likely won't remember any of it tomorrow. show review by angelico on 2005-06-12 17:29 Rating: 9 Approval: 08.1% (6 votes) As time goes by, more and more people (not only kids) tends to watch anime as product of full enjoyment. Some direct their atention to the classic and cult titles, others find satisfaction in the new action packed mainstream titles. But the result it's the same. And the pos-apocaliptic world theme is never done for. In Blue Submarine nº6, the theme maintains. The world faces total oblivion, in a never lasting war btw a submarine force and a army of genetic altered beings, maid by a suposed madman. The animation it's superb (one of the first to use cgi) and mixes well with the sound (an up-beat jazzy sound). Like a GYBE! song, the story starts good, gaining by the minute the memento and ending in a climax. It only lacks more on the character building. A good title for the ones entering the world of anime, besides the well-knowed titles of GITS,Akira, NGE or Nausicaa. show review by gambit on 2002-11-28 19:41 Rating: 8.33 Approval: 13.6% (17 votes) Starting as something like the non-anime movie A.I. it wasn't that promising. But soon this 4 episodes ova developes its own characteristics and a better storyline. The story is okay, nothing much (some guy has to help out to save a post-apocalypse world from some madman) but the end is pretty good. Quite some psychology in this series, and together with the amazing CG (Full Metal Panic looks bad compared with this one), this definitely is something to see. Anime & CG together never merged that well as in this OVA. Unlike cyberpunk, biopunk does not centre on information technology but on synthetic biology. *+ · · · human enhancementHuman enhancement can take various forms: It can be something comparatively non-intrusive as a power-up drug, a form of machine implantation or cyberization ("SAC Solid State Society"), or outright - possibly atrocious - genetic manipulation ("Ao no 6-gou"). Plot-wise enhanced protagonists in anime usually have to pay a price for their enhancements, be it physical or mental. *** · · · · genetic modificationStory-wise, genetic modification is usually centred on humans, probably the most subtle and creepy way of messing with mankind. Playing with the fear of the unknown, genetically altered humans are technically a new species, that may not only surpass but actually replace unaltered humans. The level of modification will vary from subtle changes in "look" (e.g. beauty), to mental enhancements (PSI powers), to more or less atrocious adaptations to extreme environments (breath under water). *** · · · mechaMecha in Japanese basically means mechanical things; everything from an electric whisk or a car to a spaceship or a robot. Here however we limit it to the more exotic things usually referred to as mecha anime: robots, whether controlled by a human or not, and their ilk. * · · · · robotA robot is an automatically guided machine, able to do tasks on its own. Another common characteristic is that by its appearance or movements, a robot often conveys a sense that it has intent or agency of its own. Not to be confused with android (human-like robot). · · · · · piloted robotPiloted Robots are, as the name suggests, robots that cannot control themselves; they need to be steered from somewhere, this can be from a human sitting inside or a remote controlled option. * · · · · · transforming craftA transforming craft is an object built by humans or other intelligent lifeforms, usually a robot but sometimes also a vehicle of some sort, that can rearrange its parts in order to switch between a minimum of two forms. * · tragedyTragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. * maintenance tagsThese tags are used for maintenance. · TO BE MOVED TO CHARACTERTags under this parent tag are going to be moved to character tags and removed from the anime they`re currently assigned to. In most cases it should go hand to hand with sci-fi since we expect the future to consist of advanced technology, however, in the case where it`s explicitly stated in the story that the anime takes place "x years into the future", the state of technology doesn`t matter as long as it`s long into the future. The anime can be set in an alternative universe not tied with our own, as long as it has a futuristic feel to it. This category sports quite a lot of anime, mostly stemming from SciFi, but not necessarily only from there. *** target audienceAnime, like everything else in the modern world, is targeted towards specific audiences, both implicitly by the creators and overtly by the marketing. · seinenSeinen, literally "young man", is one of the main demographic classifications applied to manga, and, by extension, to anime, especially manga-based ones.
