Shakur Stevenson defeated Artem Harutyunyan by unanimous decision to retain his WBC lightweight title on Saturday night at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. While Stevenson dominated the fight from the opening bell, he failed to impress against an opponent that was a big underdog and had never fought for a world title.
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), from Newark, was coming off a forgettable fight against Edwin De Los Santos in November. In that fight, neither boxer landed double-digit punches in any of the 12 rounds. Against Harutyunyan (12-2, 7 KOs), of Armenia, now fighting out of Germany, Stevenson was more active, landing 170 total punches, but once again he needed to go the distance.
On the same night in Ontario, California, William Zepeda scored his fourth consecutive stoppage victory (and 19th in his last 21 fights), a third-round KO of Giovanni Cabrera.
Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs), of San Mateo Atenco, Mexico, was fighting for the second time this year. He demolished Maxi Hughes in four rounds last March. With the victory, he leapfrogs Stevenson for third place in the lightweight division.
In the co-main event in Newark, Robson Conceicao finally won his first major world title with a split-decision victory over O'Shaquie Foster to grab the WBC junior lightweight belt.
Conceicao (19-2-1, 9 KOs), of Brazil, lost title opportunities against Oscar Valdez in 2021 and Stevenson in 2022. Last November, he seemed to be on his way, but the fight against Emanuel Navarrete was called a majority draw, allowing Navarrete to keep his title and leaving Conceicao still without one.
While it was a close fight and many thought Foster had won, Conceicao took the title and moves up three spots in the 130-pound division. Foster (22-3, 12 KOs), of Houston, Texas, falls down to the No. 5 spot.
Sunday in Tokyo, Fernando Martinez unified two junior bantamweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Kazuto Ioka.
Martinez (17-0, 9 KOs), of Buenos Aires, Argentina, added the WBA belt to his IBF title with a dominant victory on the road. He won in impressive fashion by scorecards of 120-108, 117-111 and 116-112. He moves two spots to No. 2, while Ioka (31-3-1, 16 KOs), of Osaka, Japan, falls to No. 4.
ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
