Glendale Heights is a village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 25 miles (40 km) northwest of the city's downtown. The population was 34,208 at the 2010 census.
History
Glendale Heights was incorporated as a village in 1959. The village was named after the nearby Glendale Country Club, which was founded in the late 19th century. The village was originally developed as a planned community, with the first homes being built in the early 1960s.
Geography
Glendale Heights is located at 41°53'7" North, 88°7'51" West (41.885, -88.1308). According to the 2010 census, Glendale Heights has a total area of 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2), of which 5.7 square miles (14.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Glendale Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the American Bottling Company, the largest independent bottler of Pepsi-Cola products in the United States.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 34,208 people, 12,845 households, and 8,945 families residing in the village. The population density was 5,976.3 people per square mile (2,310.2/km2). There were 13,541 housing units at an average density of 2,364.2 per square mile (912.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 63.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.2% of the population.
There were 12,845 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $62,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,945.
