Work with The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County for nonprofit grants.

The Community Foundation offers one grant cycle per year to connect local nonprofit organizations with funding. The application deadline is September 1. Applications are open two months before the deadline. See exact details on the Grants Available page. Agencies may apply every year.

To seek nonprofit funding through the Giving Back process, agencies must be tax-exempt public charities with Section 501(c)(3) status from the IRS code. Organizations must be physically located in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County, and the project or program to be funded must serve the local area.  Please contact us if you have questions regarding eligibility before beginning an application.

Religious organizations are welcome to apply if the project significantly aids the community. Schools are not eligible to apply. Nonprofit grants are made without regard to factors of gender, race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation.

Funding comes from multiple sources benefitting many nonprofit organizations.

The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County shares Giving Back grant requests with our donors, local family and private foundations, other local philanthropists, and local giving circles. Projects are also marketed through an annual publication in the Daily News-Record each November. Current project requests from nonprofit organizations are updated on our website and highlighted at all Community Foundation events.

Donations for nonprofit projects are at the discretion of individual donors, corporations, and civic clubs, and are not distributed on any certain timeline. Donors may contribute from their funds at The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County. Individuals may also choose to send funding directly to a nonprofit agency. In that instance, the TCFHR may not know about the funding, even though it resulted from the Giving Back process.

Competitive grant funding, that utilizes the Giving Back process, is awarded end the end of the calendar year.
