Suspect in officer-involved shooting in Gulfport dies

The suspect shot in Gulfport during a narcotics stop has died, Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer confirmed.

Switzer said 22-year-old George Jones III was taken to the Singing River Gulfport emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 10:47. Jones had multiple gunshot wounds, Switzer said.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting that happened about 10 a.m. Wednesday and involved Gulfport Police.

According to MBI, narcotics officers with the Gulfport Police Department saw Jones, who was described as acting suspicious, walking along Dedeaux Road.

When officers tried to make contact with Jones, he fled and then pointed a weapon towards the officers.

The officers then discharged their weapons striking Jones, who was taken to Singing River. The officer received no serious physical injuries.

Gulfport Police said the incident was just yards from a K-12 private school, Temple Baptist Church.

This information is preliminary and subject to change. MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
