Class Act Teacher of the Month: Back Bay Elementary’s Morgan Elam

The end of the school year is fast approaching, but that’s not stopping Grant Chighizola from heading to the classroom to highlight another star teacher here in South Mississippi.

Our Class Act this month is a kindergarten teacher who is dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable environment for all of her students.

You’ll find calming lamps and lots of color in Morgan Elam’s classroom at Back Bay Elementary, a place where young learners come to be inspired. “They enjoy coming, and you get to set the stage for what happens, you know the rest of their educational career. So, it’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s like the most fun responsibility.”

Mrs. Elam says her teaching career has been quite a ride to this point, but she says she wouldn’t change it for anything. “I started out in special education, I did COVID and now it feels like it’s starting to settle. So, it’s been a ride, but it’s been a good one, and I’ve definitely learned a lot.”

Elam says her teaching philosophy is simple. “As long as we take care of them here, the learning will come. It’s not that hard to work for, as long as they enjoy the atmosphere and the environment.”

Of course, it’s always nice to feel appreciated. “You come to work every day and you don’t expect it, but it is very, very thoughtful, and so we appreciate the appreciation!”
