Many people think they cannot have knowledge or understanding of God without reading books. But hearing is better than reading, and seeing is better than hearing. Hearing about Benares is different from reading about it; but seeing Benares is different from either hearing or reading. The Holi celebrations of Mathura and Vrindavan are extremely well known. Mathura is said to be the birthplace of the Hindu deity, Lord Krishna and in addition to the Holi bonfire and the celebration with colours, the villages of Barsana and Nandagaon near Mathura have Lathmar Holi. This is an interesting part of the Holi Festival where men from the village of Nandgaon visit Barsana to be beaten by the women. Vrindavan also has Phoolon Wali Holi, which is celebrated with flowers.
