Information Society (IO) is a term that denotes a society in which information is a key component of economic and social activities. Information and communications technology (ICT) is software and hardware for communications and data interchange, such as: radio, TV, fax, satellite dish, fixed phone, mobile phone, personal computer, Internet, e-mail. Internet (World Wide Web) – World-wide open network based on a standardized Internet protocol (IP) that enables users from various places to communicate and exchange audio-visual information. Narrowband connection defined by type of the Internet connection includes: - Dial-up is a temporary connection to the Internet via an analogue (standard) modem and standard telephone line (public switched telephone network PSTN). It is considered as the typical example of a low speed connection (narrowband), capable of carrying up to 56 kilobits per second (Kbit/s). - ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network connection is a temporary connection to the Internet designed to allow digital transmission of voice, picture and data at the same time over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in better quality and higher speeds (up to 128 Kbit/s) than available with analogue systems. - Mobile Internet narrowband - ? connection via low speed mobile phone networks, e.g. GPRS and others with capacity of about 256 Kbit/s as the sum of the capacity in both directions (download / upload). Broadband connection defined by type of the Internet connection includes: - xDSL -Digital Subscriber Line are technologies (as ADSL, HDSL, SDSL, VDSL etc.) that transport data at high speeds (i.e. equal to or higher than 144 kbit/s) over standard copper telephone wires. - Other high speed fixed (wire or wireless) connections: cable modem ‘cable TV network connection’, leased lines, ATM, optical fibre connection, satellite connection; Wi-Fi connection etc.) - Mobile Internet broadband - a connection via high speed mobile phone networks, using a long range wireless transmission of the 3rd generation (3G) mobile network technologies based on the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), such as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System - Wideband ‘W’-CDMA); CDMA2000x; CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO; CDMA 2000 1x EV-DV), or some other high capacity mobile technologies based on GPRS, such as EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution - EGPRS) etc.
