A cleaning crew at an Airbnb discovered boxes containing roughly 235 pounds of methamphetamine last month, Alhambra police said on Sunday, June 2.

Footage from a Ring camera shows two people transporting the drugs in a U-Haul van, police said in a news release. The same van returned to the home on the 1400 block of South Ethel Avenue as police were on scene and quickly made a U-turn to leave the area, according to authorities.

But they were arrested on suspicion of transporting narcotics.

The cleaning crew had called police shortly before noon on May 24 after seeing multiple boxes. When officers arrived, they found the more than 200 pounds of methamphetamine, Alhambra Police Sgt. Efren Tamayo said.

It was not clear if the crew realized what was in the boxes. It also was not clear whether police believe the boxes had been forgotten, or were just being transported at different times.

“The reported criminal activity has no place on Airbnb and we have removed a booking guest from the platform as investigations continue. Our team is working closely with the host to provide support, and we stand ready to assist the Alhambra Police Department with their investigations,” a company spokesperson said in a statement Monday, June 3.

The street value of the drugs seized was not immediately provided.
