Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena has a new interim CEO.

Howard Kahn, a veteran nonprofit healthcare executive, will lead the organization during the homeless provider’s  leadership transition.

He’s been in the role since April 29, following the departure of Anne Miskey, who stepped down to focus on health and family.

Howard’s appointment by the organization’s Board of Directors comes as USHS is aiming to reinforce its commitment in the area and its operational impact, which spans from homeless outreach services to housing and community integration.

With three decades of leadership experience in managing large-scale health and social service, officials said Kahn is well-suited to lead during the transition.

Among past roles, he served as the founding president and CEO of the California Wellness Foundation, and as the chief executive officer of LA Care, the nation’s largest public health plan.

It didn’t hurt that back in 2018 he served a stint as interim CEO with Union Station.

He is chair of Physicians for a Healthy California and chair of philanthropy for the Good Hope Medical Foundation.

“Returning to Union Station Homeless Services during this pivotal period is both an exciting  anda tremendous responsibility,” said Kahn in a statement. “I am committed to maintaining our core mission andsupporting our staff and the families and individuals we serve. My focus is on reinforcing the foundation the Board, staff and volunteers have built together, ensuring a seamless transition that upholds our values and strengthens our capacity to serve.”

Trustees said Kahn had unique attribute to do just that at a time when the organization is looking to strengthen its commitment to a “housing first” model.

“Howard is uniquely equipped to lead USHS at this juncture,” said Jesse Torres, chair of the USHS Board in a statement announcing the appointment. “His previous leadership experience with our organization and his profound commitment to our mission will help ensure a smooth transition and a strong foundation for future advancements.

Officials said USHS is at a “critical juncture” as it seeks to bolster services in the San Gabriel Valley.

Under Kahn’s interim leadership, the organization plans to focus on:

  • Strengthening organizational effectiveness by reinforcing internal processes andensuring efficient operation;
  • Enhancing service quality by strengthening commitment to the Housing First modeland trauma-informed care; and
  • Expanding community outreach by working closely with local government, communitypartners, and stakeholders to foster solutions to homelessness.
