Ian Hamilton (COVID-19 IL) is expected to rejoin the Yankees on Tuesday.

The Yankees already optioned out Yoendrys Gomez on Sunday to free up a spot in their bullpen for Hamilton’s return. The 28-year-old hurler has registered a 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 19/9 K/BB ratio over 22 2/3 innings of work out of the Yankees’ bullpen this season.

Yankees optioned RHP Yoendrys Gomez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 24-year-old right-hander couldn’t have done a much better job in his limited action with the Yankees, striking out all three batters that he faced in his lone inning of work. It shouldn’t take him long to earn another opportunity to work out of the Yankees’ bullpen.

Alex Verdugo slugged his seventh home run of the season on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to power the Yankees to victory over the Padres.

Verdugo tagged Padres’ closer Robert Suarez for his 351-foot (99.3 mph EV) solo shot in the ninth inning that pulled the Yankees to within three runs at 5-2. He finished the afternoon 1-for-4 plus a strikeout and is now hitting .261/.324/.431 with seven long balls and 28 RBI on the year.

Juan Soto doubled, walked and drove in a run as the Yankees fell to the Padres on Sunday afternoon in San Diego.

The 25-year-old superstar broke a scoreless tie with a run-scoring double off of Joe Musgrove in the sixth inning. That would wind up being the Bombers’ only tally until the ninth inning. Soto is once again enjoying an outstanding all-around season at the plate — slashing a robust .310/.408/.571 with 14 homers, 44 RBI and four stolen bases.

NYY Starting Pitcher #36

Clarke Schmidt pitched well in a losing effort against the Padres on Sunday afternoon, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits over his five-plus innings of work.

The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing three free passes. All of the damage done against him came in the sixth inning, as Schmidt began the inning by allowing Jake Cronenworth to reach on an error and then issuing a walk to Manny Machado. He then turned the ball over to the bullpen who allowed both inherited runners to score. Schmidt got 16 swinging strikes on 101 pitches on the day — 10 of those on his cutter — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll carry an outstanding 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 67/20 K/BB ratio (60 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s showdown against the Giants in San Francisco.

Jon Berti has been diagnosed with a high-grade calf strain.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that the infielder is going to be out for a while with no timetable for his return. Berti was placed on the injured list Saturday, and it does not appear this will be a short-term injury for the 34-year-old infielder.

Royals returned RHP Matt Sauer to the Yankees.

Sauer was a Rule 5 draft pick, so after he was designated for assignment, the Royals had to offer him back to the Yankees. The Yankees accepted. He’ll report back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and needs to be added to the 40-man roster to pitch for the Yankees.

Jose Trevino (illness) is back in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Padres.

Trevino missed a couple of games while dealing with illness. The backstop will hit eighth and start behind the plate against Joe Musgrove and the Padres.
Clay Holmes

NYY Relief Pitcher #35

Clay Holmes tossed a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the save against the Padres on Saturday.

Holmes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and struck out one on his way to his 15th save of the season, which is second among closers in all of baseball. He blew a save earlier this week, but has since bounced back with a four-out save and a clean ninth inning save. Holmes figures to continue racking up saves the way the Yankees’ season is going.
Aaron Judge

NYY Right Fielder #99

Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI against the Padres on Saturday.

Judge started the scoring with a two-run home run off Dylan Cease in the first inning, his 17th of the year. He’s now homered in four consecutive games. Judge is up to a .280 average and 1.050 OPS with 39 RBI on the season. He’s on pace for 52 home runs this season.
