The Stately Oak is an annual publication detailing the activities of the development team of the LSU AgCenter and the LSU College of Agriculture. Each year it highlights the generous gifts of our donors, the outstanding work of our faculty and staff, the accomplishments of our students, 4-H activities, and more.

Stately Oak 2023

LSU President William F. Tate IV has set five priority areas in the LSU Scholarship First Agenda, including agriculture. The campaign seeks to preserve our rich heritage of culture and tradition and protect the people of Louisiana in the ways that they deserve. Also in this annual issue of The Stately Oak is a focus on the donors who enable innovative research focused on initiatives such as sugarcane varieties and control of feral hogs. Meanwhile, student and faculty accomplishments include diversity initiatives and the retirement of a legacy contributor to the textiles program.

Camping has been a fixture of the 4-H Youth Development Program since its earliest beginnings. In this issue of The Stately Oak, campgoers and staff reflect on 100 years of camp activities while rebuilding continues after hurricanes Laura and Delta. This issue also recognizes professorships and scholarships made possible by our donors, notes the reopening of the textile museum and highlights international student experiences in the LSU College of Agriculture.

This issue on diversity focuses on new leadership and initiatives, as well as the continuation of previous efforts. Diversity permeates through giving campaigns, student organizations, and more. In addition, this issue explores a wetlands sake made from LSU AgCenter-developed rice and activities at the FOODii program, which focuses on a safe, secure, and sustainable food supply.

COVID-19 presented challenges for much of the world, but the LSU AgCenter, LSU College of Agriculture, and development team met the moment. From manufacturing personal protective equipment to engaging 4-H youths through online programs, adaptions were successful. Donors continued the tradition of giving while our development team welcomed a new senior director.

In March of 2019, LSU launched the Fierce for the Future campaign that unites LSU statewide campuses to advance arts and culture, the coast, economic development, health, education and leadership. This issue explores those programs, the donors that make it possible, the faculty who support the mission, and the students and alumni who stay connected.

In the past, the LSU AgCenter distributed Advances, an annual newsletter, which detailed the philanthropy benefiting the LSU AgCenter and the College of Agriculture. Now, The Stately Oak takes its place. While this magazine continues the tradition of Advances, it will offer so much more. We hope readers enjoy the stories in The Stately Oak and that they will help connect people to the strong roots of agriculture in Louisiana.
