The Indian wrestling fraternity can breathe a collective sigh of relief. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided to scrap the selection trials for the Paris Olympics, paving the way for all six quota winners to represent India at the Games.
This decision comes after several quota winners, including Aman Sehrawat (57kg freestyle), Anshu Malik (57kg women’s freestyle), and Nisha Dahiya (68kg women’s freestyle), expressed concerns about holding trials so close to the Olympics. The wrestlers worried about potential injuries and the additional stress of making weight for a second time.
Shift in policy by WFI
Previously, under the leadership of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the WFI had implemented a trial system in 2021.
This move aimed to prevent complacency among quota winners and offer opportunities to promising young wrestlers.

Focus shifts to Paris Olympics
The new WFI administration, led by president Sanjay Singh, has prioritized the well-being and peak performance of the quota winners. With the Paris Olympics just months away, the federation believes focusing on training and maintaining fitness is crucial.
A WFI source stated to The Tribune, “Making weight is a major concern for wrestlers. Holding trials could lead to injuries before the Games. We need our wrestlers fit and fresh in Paris.”
Vinesh Phogat weight concerns addressed
This decision also eliminates the possibility of a trial between Vinesh Phogat and Antim Panghal in the 53kg category. Vinesh struggled to maintain weight for the 50kg category qualifiers but considers 53kg her ideal weight class. While she might have preferred a shot in the 53kg trials, the new policy ensures her participation in the 50kg category.
