AB de Villiers to be next India head coach? South African legend drops major hint

'Never say never' said de Villiers although he admitted that it is not something that appeals to him at this point of time.

The search for the next senior men’s head coach in cricket is still ongoing in India. After the T20 World Cup 2024 concludes in June, Rahul Dravid, who was appointed to the position back in late 2021, is scheduled to resign as India’s head coach. Former players like Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming, Justin Langer, and others have been mentioned as possible candidates to lead India as head coach ever since Dravid announced he would not be extending his contract with the BCCI.

Former South African captain AB de Villiers has now shared his thoughts on being offered the remote chance to become India’s coach at some point in the near future, as BCCI continues to focus on finding the perfect candidate.

It’s not something that really appeals to me now. But as I said, never say never. Down the line, things might change,” de Villiers said while speaking to News18.

I absolutely have no idea. I do think I’ll enjoy coaching. There’s certain elements I won’t enjoy as much, which I will have to learn. But I think there are elements of a coaching job that I’ll enjoy a lot. Things that I’ve learned over the years, the maturity that I’ve got now at the age of 40, looking back, a lot of things look a lot clearer when I look back at my career. So those kinds of learnings could be valuable for some younger players, even some senior players,” de Villiers added.
