LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK)  KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Friday night weather update for May 24, 2024.

Tonight: Mostly clear. Low of 58°. Winds SE 8-12 MPH.
Tomorrow: Mostly sunny. Fire danger. High of 97°. Winds SW 20-25 MPH.

Tonight:
A calm and quiet night is expected across the South Plains region tonight. We will keep a mostly clear sky around the forecast area, with winds out of the southeast around 8-12 MPH. Around sunrise on Saturday, temperatures are expected to bottom out in the upper 40s to low 60s, with coolest temperatures remaining over northwestern locations.

Forecast Low Temperatures for Saturday Morning, May 25, 2024.

Saturday:
A warm and windy Saturday is expected across eastern New Mexico and western Texas. Wildfire concern will increase due to several factors. Relative humidity values will be below 10% for a good portion of the South Plains throughout the day. This, combined with above average temperatures and dry ground fuels, has prompted a Red Flag Warning to be issued for central and western areas. Avoid outdoor burning, and be extra cautious with activities that could result in a spark. High temperatures will peak in the 90s to lower 100s under a mostly sunny sky. Winds will be sustained around 20-30 MPH out of the southwest, with gusts as high as 40-45 MPH. Areas of blowing dust will also be possible. Winds will gradually wane overnight, with low temperatures falling into the mid 50s to upper 60s.

Forecast High Temperatures for Saturday Afternoon, May 25, 2024.

SHORT TERM:

Temperatures will remain warm Sunday and Monday, but not as hot as what is expected for Saturday. Highs will continue to peak in the upper 80s to upper 90s both days, with a clear to mostly clear sky remaining around the region for most of the 48 hour period. Clouds will begin to increase late Monday evening into the overnight hours. Morning lows will remain in the 50s and 60s each morning. We will remain completely dry both days, with winds shifting from the west-northwest on Sunday to the east-southeast on Monday. Sustained speeds of 10-20 MPH can be expected each day.

KLBK 3-Day Forecast Valid May 24, 2024.

EXTENDED FORECAST:

Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase Tuesday through Friday of next week, with Thursday currently having the highest likelihood of seeing widespread shower and storm activity. There will be the potential for severe storms to develop each day. As of now, damaging winds and large hail appear to be the main concerns. Additionally, several tornadoes will also remain possible. These showers and storms could also produce locally heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding. Eastern areas currently have the highest likelihood of seeing rainfall, with western areas being the least likely to see any severe weather or rainfall. Daytime highs will range anywhere from the upper 70s to the mid 90s each day. Tuesday currently looks to be the warmest, with Wednesday trending coolest as of the latest data trends. Winds will remain out of the east-southeast each day, sustained anywhere from 10-25 MPH. Morning lows will bottom out in the 50s and 60s close to sunrise each day. Periods of clouds and sun are likely each day, with Wednesday likely seeing more clouds than sun.
