About Us

The Public Works Department works year-round to improve our residents’ quality of life and maintain Delran as a desirable community.  Our department consists of 15 employees including a superintendent, one supervisor, one secretarial assistant, two mechanics and ten roadmen.

We work all over Delran township every day and can be recognized by our lime green shirts.  Please call the office at 856-461-7737 if you have a question regarding the care and upkeep of township properties.

Some of the various responsibilities of Public Works include: pothole repair, leaf/branch pickup, snow removal, clearing and repairing of storm drains, painting crosswalks, maintaining irrigation, maintaining all parks in common areas, and repairing or replacing road signs.  Public Works also maintains and operates a compost facility and we also have a fully equipped automotive garage in which we repair all police vehicles, township heavy equipment and vehicles, and sewer department vehicles.

The public works department also provides a drop off facility for all recycling, paint, electronics, TVs, and motor oil.

Additionally, we produce a fine quality of wood chips which are available for Delran residents to pick up, free of charge. (Optional delivery is available for $40.00 for 6 Cubic Yards)

Public Works Schedule

Services

Branch Pickup

Please note that branch pickup occurs from April 1st to October 2nd. All branches must be curbside by October 1st for the final collection October 2nd. (Curbside refers to branches being in the area between the curb and the sidewalk.)

Branch or limb sizes are limited to a maximum of 8’ long and 4” in diameter and should be stacked in the same direction.

No pile of yard trimmings bigger than 4 Cubic Yards or 12’ Long x 3’ High x 3’ Wide will be picked up.

Yard trimmings must be:

  • Uncut and left at full length and stacked with ends facing the same direction;
  • Free of leaves or vines mixed in the pile;
  • Piled in a neat and manageable condition.
  • Placed between sidewalk and curb. Yard trimmings may not be left in the street due to the State’s StormWater Management rules.

Residents can also drop off branches and tree limbs year-round Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 2:30pm (Summer Hours: 6:00am to 1:30pm) in or next to the wood dumpster at the Public Works yard behind the municipal building.

Leaf Collection
Leaves are collected in the Fall (Mid-October to December 1st) and in the Spring (April 1st to April 30th). All leaves should be placed in the street next to the curb. Please do not put leaves in your trash bins.

BAGGED leaves may also be dropped off at the Public Works yard year-round Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 2:30pm (Summer Hours 6:00am to 1:30pm) and every 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month 8:00am to 12:00pm.

Grass Clippings
There is NO curbside collection for grass clippings. Burlington County and Delran Township urge all residents to use mulching mowers. If you require pickup of grass clippings, please bag and place in your trash container.

Remember, residents’ overall taxes are impacted by “Tipping Fees” (fees paid to the Burlington County Landfill). Allowing grass clippings to stay on your lawn saves money and does not contribute to thatch unless the lawn is cut when wet and clippings become too dense.

Trees & Stumps

Stumps and old firewood can be brought to Public Works from 7:00am to 2:30pm (Summer Hours: 6:00am to 1:30pm). Residents can also request to have stumps picked up by Public Works for a fee of $25. Please call Public Works at 856-461-7737 to schedule a stump pick up.

Please Note: Residents who have cleared their lots or cut down trees must make arrangements with a tree service to dispose of entire trees and limbs or use a truck to take to the landfill if over 4 cubic yards.

Snow Plowing

Delran Township Snow Parking Ordinance indicates that residents must remove cars from the street wherever possible to allow for effective plowing. Residents who do not have off-street parking may move their vehicles onto their lawns during the snow emergency. Cars should remain off the roads until roads are clear to avoid the snow removal process plowing in the car.

Please do not begin shoveling sidewalks and driveways until streets have been cleared. Snow and ice MUST be removed from sidewalks (or treated with ice melt) within 12 hours of daylight after precipitation has ended. Shoveled snow or snow blowers chutes must NOT deposit snow into the streets or onto sidewalks. If possible, please safely ensure fire hydrants are not blocked.

Please refer to Township Ordinance § 257-15  for additional information regarding snow and ice removal.

Street Signs & Traffic Signals
The Department of Public Works maintains all street signs, stop signs, and road signs throughout the town.  The signs are replaced as needed according to a maintenance schedule. Please report any missing signs or traffic signal outages to the Police department. Please call the Public Works office at 856-461-7737 for “day burners” (street lights on during the day) or street lights that do not come on at night.
Parks, Playgrounds and Fields Maintenance
The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining public facilities, outdoor parks, recreation facilities, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and all playgrounds including Green Acres. This includes mowing a multitude of acres, trimming trees, landscaping, and painting and repairing park benches, playground equipment, and buildings.
Trash Pickup

All trash must be contained in the 65 or 96 gallon trash containers. One can has been provided for each eligible home. Make sure larger items are not placed against or on top of your trash can. Trash should not be put curbside prior to 5:00pm the day before your scheduled collection day as per Delran Ordinance 299-11.C

Please keep the lid closed. When material becomes wet, it becomes heavier and our landfill fees increase, essentially paying extra to put water in the landfill.

  • Carpenter wood ( commonly referred to as dimensional lumber, 2” x 4”s, plywood, etc.) should be cut into short lengths so they can be placed inside the trash container.
  • Carpet materials should be cut and placed inside trash containers.
  • Alkaline batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, etc.) can now be thrown out with your regular trash.
  • Broken Glass is not recyclable and should be taped securely before being placed inside trash container.
  • Cans of wet paint CANNOT be put in trash containers. Kitty litter may be placed in paint cans to absorb the liquid prior to placing them in trash bins. Public Works will accept cans of paint that still have liquid in them at the Public Works Yard. Go to Recycle Coach to find out what to do for special items.
Safe Syringe (Sharps) Disposal
Improper disposal of hypodermic needles may cause serious risk to others. Loose needles, syringes, and other medical sharps should be collected in heavy-duty plastic containers.

This can be a source of disease transmission to both humans and animals. Please call 856-461-7737 for questions regarding proper disposal of sharps.
For questions regarding other materials, please call the Public Works Department at 856-461-7737 from Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm

Bulk Pickup
The trash company picks up white goods (large items containing hazardous materials, such as refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, freezers, unit air conditioners, washing machines, clothes dryers, and other similar domestic and commercial large appliances) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Please call 856-461-7734 ext. 100 to schedule a pickup. Twenty-four hour notice is required.

All other large items such as a sofa, other furniture, mattresses, etc. will be picked up on your regular trash day. The first truck will not pick up these items. A second truck will be dispatched for collection of bulk trash later in the day.
