Eidur Gudjohnsen has shocked the Premier League clubs chasing his services by demanding £100,000 a week in wages.
Barcelona's former Chelsea striker has already snubbed a move by West Ham to take him to Upton Park.
Middlesbrough are also interested in the Iceland international while Blackburn are also monitoring his situation at the Nou Camp.
The Hammers have switched their interest to Boro striker Yakubu, who is also wanted by Everton while Manchester City have allowed young forward Ishmael Miller to join West Brom on loan.
Baggies boss Tony Mowbray has admitted Curtis Davies and Paul Robinson are on the brink of leaving The Hawthorns.
Davies has been strongly linked with a move to Spurs and Aston Villa, with both clubs in need of central defensive reinforcement.
Robinson also remains on Wigan's radar, despite recent problems over his medical, and Latics boss Chris Hutchings said: "There is a bit of a stalemate on that side and with the fee. It's still on-going."
Wigan are also keen on Preston left-back Matt Hill while Everton boss David Moyes wants to sign Sheffield Wednesday left-winger Chris Brunt in a £3m deal.
Derby boss Billy Davies will pay a club record £5.5m this week to sign Southampton striker Kenwyne Jones.
MK Dons boss Paul Ince is set to snatch Wycombe Wanderers striker Jermaine Easter from under the noses of Swindon and Millwall and David Unsworth will today sign a one-year deal with Burnley.
Rumour of the day: Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Yoan Gouffran after watching the Caen forward in their past two matches.
No chance: Portsmouth will not allow captain Sol Campbell to leave Fratton Park despite increased interest from Spain.
