Mendiola
At 12:47 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a reported burglary at Hyrule Market in Mangilao, where a witness reported seeing two men forcibly enter the store through the front doors. They fled in a dark sedan, which police were able to locate.
Officers conducted a traffic stop, and the car stopped in the middle of the road with its lights off. Then it drove off at a high rate of speed, despite police having their lights and sirens activated.
Several shots were fired from the vehicle during the pursuit, and an officer returned fire, according to a news release from Guam Police Department. Nobody was injured as a result of the gunfire, police said.
The vehicle came to an abrupt stop “as if crashing into something,” according to the magistrate’s complaint. “The occupants appeared injured consistent with a vehicle collision without fastened seatbelts.”
Mendiola, the driver, later told police she ducked down during the crossfire and crashed the car.
The store owner reported about $700 in phone cards and other merchandise had been taken. The front doors of the market were damaged, and a rusty crowbar was confiscated.
Ethan Aguero told police he took the gun from a sleeping relative, and he said he fired the gun at police and threw it from the window during the chase, according to the complaint. He said he and the other two talked about “hitting stores up for money” prior to the burglary, and that he and Vicente Aguero burglarized the store while Mendiola waited in the car.
He said that during the chase, he fired at the police car to hit the radiator and disable the vehicle, the complaint stated.
Mendiola said Vicente Aguero did not want to burglarize the store because he was scared, but “Mendiola told him they need money and it would be a one-time thing,” the complaint stated.
If found guilty of all charges, Ethan Aguero could face 70 years in prison. Mendiola could face 12 years and Vicente Aguero could face 11 years.
