– The Last EmperorApril 15, 2024 at 9:18 am #1205804411Yesterday i rewatched the originals Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid…
…and then today i watched Wish and now i wanna kill myself. How can a studio do this?
I thought “Wish” was cute. I especially loved the goat and the chickens as well as “This is the Thanks I Get”. Saying that, I did want a stronger ending. It felt a little “BAM BAM BAM BAM WOMP” if that makes sense.
ReplyCopy URLApril 16, 2024 at 11:28 am #1205805732“Nyad” (2023): Not nearly the disaster I was led to believe it was, but at the same time, I kept wondering why the two Oscar-winning documentarians who directed this narrative film (Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi) didn’t make a better documentary instead, one that might have at least attempted to tackle the veracity of Diana Nyad’s claims? I’m guessing they weren’t interested in making that film in either capacity, but maybe the omission would have been far more egregious in a documentary format. It might have also taken directors who weren’t so chummy with the real-life subject. I did like how thorny they made Nyad here, with no hagiography-level whitewashing of her stubbornness and arrogance. Annette Bening was in fine form, both from a physical perspective (intensive training with a former Olympian swimmer for a year) and an emotional one. I shouldn’t have cast her as the season-long villain who stole Margot Robbie’s Oscar nomination, though as far as feminist screeds go, I got far more out of “Barbie” than I ever will from “Nyad.” Jodie Foster, welcome back, don’t call it a comeback, whatever. Bonnie was such a welcoming presence as a counter to Diana’s intensity, and Foster was more lived-in than I’ve possibly ever seen from her work. Also sensational in a role that should have generated supporting actor conversation was Rhys Ifans as John Bartlett, the stern and tragic navigator with a heart o’ gold. It’s night and day from the last role I saw him in on “House of the Dragon.” My only negatives were some corniness in a lackluster screenplay from Julia Cox, ill-advised flashbacks, and a loopy hallucination sequence involving the Taj Mahal that has to be seen to be believed. Points for the commitment and training, no doubt, and two consummate acting pros elevating meh material as only the best veterans can.

8/10
I LOVE THIS FILM. Julie Dash has a very very soft spot in my heart. Imo too ahead of her time.

April 17, 2024 at 4:05 am #1205806233AOTF. When hubby strated to play that awful music on a loop in the first 5 min I was like whoever throws him out of the window is a hero. Never have a song made a potential murder so deserving and satisfying.
You know… this was my fave last year but as time goes by, I have actually begun to think less of it…. not more? Very weird. Still great! Context: I LOVE Andrew Haigh. Hell, I defend Lean on Pete as one of the best.
This film is incredible, moving, perfectly executed. I’m saying this 6 months after watching it, and now I feel like I don’t agree with it somehow. But if I’m still thinking about it, that’s a feat!!
Still should’ve won everything tho lol.

I think i found a hidden gem, i remember i watched this movie 15 years ago but i didn’t remember that much, i just remember that i loved it, i watched it for a second time now and is even better than i remembered, this movie now is probably my favorite rom com ever, the chemistry between the leads was out of this world, i realized i don’t see that kind of chemistry in movies anymore, romance is dead in modern movies.

Paul AtreidesJune 1, 2024 at 5:51 pm #1205848976Unpopular opinion : I just watched Godzilla Minus One since it’s on Netflix and I absolutely don’t understand all the hype. It’s a good movie but I have three majors problem with it.
First of all, after all the hype surrounding the VFX, it was such a let down. I just don’t understand how this movie won the Oscar for Best VFX (the year after Avatar : The Way of Water won for it’s groundbreaking VFX… they aren’t in the same league AT ALL). Maybe my expectations were too high but it was nothing exceptional visually. Even Godzilla (2014) had better effects in my opinion. This one looked like a video game and many shots looked « green screen ».
Second, the acting was not good. I don’t know if it’s the way Japenese act, but they all overracted in a way that turned me off. It was fake, over the top and not convincing at all.
Thirdly, some decisions made by the characters made no sense. (Spoilers : like when Norico pushed Kōichi to save him just for her to die… like you could hide too?! What was the point of it?)
Other than that, it’s still a good movie and I really liked the story. For a Godzilla movie the screenplay was pretty solid!

Yeah I know for the budget. For this price it’s impressive, but movie wise I’ve seen many movies way more convincing than that.

Paul AtreidesJune 1, 2024 at 9:46 pm #1205849071Lol! You’re free to like and what you don’t like of course. That’s not my business.
But given that these types of creature features have budgets of 250mil give or take, and more importantly that Gojira San isn’t the real focus, your judgement is a little harsh, sort of..

Petition for Thailand to submit this for Best International Feature at the upcoming Oscars 🙋♂️
